I would really appreciate some advice from some ECTs who have worked abroad before, specifically Qatar.

As an ECT with no previous experience other than placements:

How much is the salary I should be expecting realistically? I’ve been given a salary based on the range I gave but as I have no previous experience of international school, I may have undercut myself.

The school mentioned that I may have to self fund my ECT induction or if they pay for it, there is a bond agreement of up to half of the cost. I have never heard of this before, so wanted to ask if anyone had this experience before.

Also is there anything else I need to keep in mind about doing my ECT abroad?

Any advice and previous experience would be appreciated.

I know that people say to do it in the UK but there’s little opportunities in my area unless I moved out from a family home - I would have to pay rent and bills which would cost way too much. I also like the idea of starting fresh and trying something new whilst I’m still young.

My main selling point is the apartment provided, which is why I’m willing to compromise on the salary, especially as I under it’s a big risk for them to take an inexperienced teacher.

I need some unbiased advice. I am about to start my ECT soon and I have secured an offer of employment in Qatar. However, I’ve also received an offer of employment at my placement school in the UK which I really like working at. The salary after tax in UK is quite similar to the one abroad but I get to have my own furnished accommodation abroad as opposed to living with family in the UK. Both countries will give me ECT certification.

My issue is with the workload - high expectations and apparently high workload that comes from working in the Middle East. The job in the UK is a lot easier in terms of stress as it’s BTEC teaching which isn’t hard to do or plan, however student work ethic is appalling and it can be boring and repetitive. The safety of being able to walk alone at night in Qatar appeals to me as a woman but I also have a fear of the unknown. I would really appreciate some advice. Thanks.
