Proof the Flip can run any N64 game

A lot of discussion about N64 performance lately, and I disagree with it not having enough power from my own experience, since it’s what I got the system for and play the most of. Out of the box, most OS don’t even run medium titles well. I’ve gotten every N64 game at least at native resolution in the past, but I decided to really push the limits today and even surprised myself. At this point, I feel the entire N64 catalog is not only playable, but it is also a good experience.

So here is 3 minutes of non-PortMaster Banjoo Tooie gameplay at 2x resolution. I’ve only tested the first several minutes for stability, but my experience with this device the past few months suggest it should hold through an entire playthrough. I’m on SpruceOS 4.4.1 using Mupen64Plus Next (Retroarch with Glide64 Core). Of course I’ll do more testing and then post settings in the future.

Banjo Tooie definitely in the top 5 hardest N64 games to emulate in my opinion due to performance demand and graphic glitches. The bottleneck has been audio/GPU, so I feel there is still CPU room left for the other games in the top 5 to also perform well. I’ve also had no issues with Jet Force Gemini and DK64.

Anyone Customize Their SpruceOS Scripts?

One of my favorite parts about SpruceOS is that it’s all written in Python/shell scripts. Because I’m a coder, I take the opportunity to add my own quality of life changes. I’m looking for more ideas of things to change and was curious if anyone else had modded in their own things? Below are some examples of things I’ve done.

Currently implemented:

  1. Change it so other controllers beside the Flip can navigate the PYUI menus.
  2. Spruce backup will automatically send it to my GoogleDrive
  3. Automatically perform a cloud save sync to my GoogleDrive on emulator launch and shut down.
  4. When launching a NDS game in Drastic, it automatically converts a .sav to .dsv and then back on shut down.

Other future plans:

  1. Make startup script detect if I’m docked or not and change settings accordingly. For example, auto enable Bluetooth, disable lid closer, change auto sleep settings, etc.
  2. A input mapper closer to SteamInput functionality to help make certain games more tolerable.
  3. Have Spruce restore allow me to select the backup I want to restore and also do a backup before overwriting.

Buy now or wait

I have a big catalog of GameCube and PS2 games I’d like to play on the go. I own a Steam Deck and Odin 2 portal for higher end performance. However, I adore my Miyoo Flip V2 for portable Gen 5 gaming and would like a bigger clamshell to handle Gen 6. Having left stick on top and not needing a grip is a must for me. I only like the smaller DS/3DS devices between 133-150mm for true portability and not the bigger XLs. Having display out is also highly preferred. This makes the Flip 2 my only current marker contender. However, it is being discounted soon based on this clearance sale. Should I just buy a Retroid Pocket Flip v2 or hold out for a possible v3? I could only get one of the two.

My fear is a v3 will stray further from my needs and then I won’t be able to order a new v2 (become XL sized, lose top joysticks, stronger more expensive chip when I already have workhorse handhelds, and lower RAM/storage). Is it worth waiting for a future handheld (any brand) to better meet my needs, or just get the Pocket Flip? Are there Issues or missing features on the Flip 2 that’s better to wait for a different device?

Nazi Zombies Portmaster Help

Has anyone been able to get the Nazi Zombies portmaster ready-to-play port working on the Flip? I feel that would be awesome on the go.

Edit: I’m currently on Spruce OS.

Spruce OS Bluetooth Workaround Solved

Like many others, I’ve struggled for hours trying to get Bluetooth controllers to connect consistently using Spruce OS. However, I’ve struggled through and can quickly get everything synced in seconds with the following tips. I’ve had up to 4 (didn’t try more) controllers connected without issue.

How to Connect

  1. Under settings, both WiFi and Bluetooth must be enabled (maybe either an OS bug or shared chip issues).
  2. After device startup or after enabling both WiFi and Bluetooth, give 5-10 seconds to allow the chip to warm up.
  3. Back all the way out to the main menu if you aren’t there already. Being in any settings menu seems to cache device discovery.
  4. Start the sync on your Bluetooth device(s).
  5. Go back into settings, and enter Bluetooth connections.
  6. Your device should show up instantly. This should just work 80% of the time. If not, see the troubleshooting section.
  7. If you fail to connect all your device before they stop searching, you must exit back out to the main menu and restart the sync for the remaining devices.

Troubleshooting

  1. If a connection gives an error, reselect it again and sometimes that helps.
  2. If that does not work, let the device sync timeout, go back out to the main menu, and try again.
  3. If that still does not work, scroll down to the bottom of the settings page and reload the UI, as it caches and sometimes that bad device profile is stuck. Then retry the connection procedure.
  4. If nothing else then reboot and you should be fine.

Let me know if this either fixes or doesn’t fix your issues!

My Dream Docked Travel Setup

Products:
Case - Switch 1 case
HDMI - mini HDMI to HDMI cable
Power - Old phone charging brick
Power Bank - Iniu Rocket Mini (10000mah 45W)
Controllers - CRKD Atom+ (pre-order arrived yesterday)

The Miyoo Flip V2 is an underrated bite-sized docked experience (finicky in some ways), but works well. I have no problem with it displaying out to my full 70” living room TV playing split screen with 2 Bluetooth controllers at native FPS. With the emulator upscaling and excellent multiplayer titles on the N64, PS1, and Dreamcast, there is something for even the most casual gamers that holds up today.

I never liked bringing my Switch or Steam Deck on day/weekend trips because the amount of things needed, especially when considering tv to available power outlet positions, required a lot of packing for the zero or 2hrs of use playing the system per trip. Everything stays in the case and I slip in the Flip when I’m ready to leave. The power bank eliminates the need for an outlet. The Atom+ is also awesome. It’s the only full pro controller setup at such a size and is surprisingly comfortable (just slightly smaller than a Switch 1 joycon with the top rail).
