How they work: Mosquito dunks are dehydrated material that has eggs for a certain nematode that preys on mosquito nymphs. You create the ideal space for a mosquito to lay its eggs. It lays its eggs in the bucket, they hatch, and the nymphs get eaten by the nematodes.

How to make them:

Fill a 5 gallon bucket about 80-90% to the top with water. Dump in a couple handfuls of plants, I used some weeds growing in the yard but you could also use grass clippings. The vegetation will decompose, releasing carbon dioxide which attracts mosquitos. Add a stick so if anything falls into the bucket it can get out. Drop in 1/4 of a dunk. Each dunk lasts a month, so one $10 pack is really all you need for the whole summer.

I did this last year and it didn't completely get rid of the mosquitos but it was definitely a lower number of them throughout the summer. The more of us do this, the better the effect it will have.

You can turn it into an arts and crafts project too if you want. Black, orange, white, and blue seem to attract them.
