My partner and I are not Canadian, so I’m wondering if there is some kind of Marketplace etiquette here that we’re completely missing.
We listed an old boiler/furnace for FREE on Facebook Marketplace. The post clearly said FREE and first come, first served, and also explained that during the week we were only available for pickups after 6 PM, while weekends were more flexible.
Someone contacted us, we confirmed it was available, and arranged for him to come pick it up. He came on Saturday, started dismantling it, and took pretty much all of the components except the furnace itself. He said he would come back later to get the rest.
He didn’t come back.
Sunday morning, we messaged him asking if he was still coming. He didn’t respond until later and then said he would come Monday morning.
At that point, someone else happened to be at the house picking up other free items and offered to take the furnace, so we let them have it. We then told the original person that the furnace had already been taken. He just have the message a thumbs up. But this morning he texted back and He got really angry and said that we now owed him $120 for his time and for the time he spent dismantling/removing the other components. He also said he would talk to his lawyer.
I explained that the item had been posted as FREE and first come, first served, and that’s when he got even more upset. His last message was: “Fine by me, you’ll learn.”
Honestly, this interaction has left me pretty confused.
He was supposed to pick everything up Saturday. He took almost everything Saturday and said he would come back later, but didn’t. We contacted him Sunday morning to see if he was still coming, and he didn’t respond until later, at which point he wanted to come Monday.
We urgently wanted everything gone, and someone else was willing to take the remaining furnace.
Did we actually do something wrong here?
And more importantly, how would you interpret “Fine by me, you’ll learn”? Is this just someone being angry and trying to intimidate us, or should I actually be concerned about the “I’ll talk to my lawyer” comment or something more serious?
We honestly thought “FREE + first come, first served” meant exactly what it says.
