Struggle and nostalgia
A lot of us think the world was a lot better pre covid. We feel a sense of nostalgia or yearning for those times. But were they really that good? during the time we didn’t think so. I think the main reason why we all seemed to have supposedly enjoyed it is because we’re viewing it in retrospect. I think its a sense of happiness we feel because we struggled more during that time as compared to now. Maybe post covid feels bleak because we severely reduced new experiences and struggles. I mean just look at our screentimes. If youre struggling to achieve a goal then you might not enjoy it at the moment. But when you’ve got success (struggle less now) and you look back, you enjoy it. Same logic.
Privilege and dehumanisation (Using the elite as an example)
The majority of the working class and those so called elite billionaires we hate so much are barely any different psychologically. Wanna know what IS the main difference? privilege. Class.
Think about it.
You see a patient with a facial deformity online. You laugh. You know its bad but you find it funny. You laugh anyways. Then you shake it off and scroll. Cuz they look funny right? But If u were on that same bed laying there with a facial deformity thats ruined ur entire life, would it really be that funny? Would you really be able to find this situation humorous if you weren’t sitting behind a slab of metal and glass in ur hands, with a normal face with 4 walls surrounding your head? You’re laughing at someone’s struggle. Take that in.
Let’s take another example.
We’ve all seen at least one meme of epstien in our feeds. Its definitely wrong. But eventually you may have stumbled upon an epstien meme and laughed. Or found it funny. Maybe you’ve seen it so much you dont feel disturbed by it anymore. It’s all the same. Do you really think we would be laughing or making memes abt this if we didnt have the privilege to live a better life than them? What if you were one of those kids? I’m sure you get the point by now. I could go on and on with examples. The pretty mock the ugly, the rich mock the poor.
The more privileged a person becomes, the more they become desensitised. The so called elites are exactly like you. They are just so privileged, their sense of amusement is inhuman. They engage in unspeakable activity. They know it’s bad. They don’t care. Just like how you laugh it off when you see a reel of a dude with a disformed face despite knowing its wrong. You’re laughing at somebody else’s struggle too. Starting to see the correlation?
And privilege goes way beyond just money or class. Its psychological too. Its about how much you have struggled. How much you’ve been through in life. A lack of struggle in life leads to lack of mental development. How can you be grateful if you’ve never experienced hardship? You dehumanise more as you gain more privilege. You dont feel as much gratitude, You become detached from those who have suffered as you no longer relate to them, sometimes to the point where its so far from your current reality that you find it amusing. Your dad may have told u stories of somebody swimming across an entire lake and climbing up a hill just to get to school. You may have found the story ridiculous and amusing. I did too. But is it really that amusing when you think about it? Are we not laughing at someone else’s struggle? The only reason we find it amusing is because of how ridiculous and far fetched it sounds to our current experiences. Similarly, Elites find things amusing but to an extreme extent due to their privilege. They are the same as you. But on a different scale. The hunter kills animals for sport and amusement. Same thing but on a different level.
Now i want you to think a few years down the line. If people are laughing at memes of epstien and facial deformity, etc. etc. What guarantee do you have that your children down the line wont be laughing at more grotesque things such as murder, sexual assault or equally grotesque acts of violence?
Dehumanisation and desensitisation occur at exponential rates with technological advancements that make life easier. Privilege sounds good, until you have it. I believe privilege and lack of struggle will be the end of humanity.
And the crazy part? it all starts with that one insensitive reel you laughed at. Its not that deep tho right? Every deed starts small. Maybe its not ur fault u were born with more privileges than someone else. Maybe you never asked for any of this. Maybe its just human nature. But now you know. Wether you take action or not, (if its even possible to change) I leave to you.
