I'm building on an original Midway Pacman cab that was converted to a 60:1. The original boards are gone so I don't feel bad completely gutting it and I'm looking to build a new control panel with a spinner and 3 buttons so I have a classic play all vertical cab.

I have the new metal control panel and I'm ready to drill but I noticed my current original panel (I'll be keeping it in storage) has a wooden layer under the metal. I'm going to duplicate it but I'm wondering if it's really needed in a home cab? I'm currently planning on building out a new one based on the new control design but really it just seems like extra weight.
