Resources on puberty for trans kids
Hi all!
I am a proud mom to a seven year old daughter (MTF). She came out earlier this year, though the writing had been on the wall for a couple of years before that. My wife (her other mom) is also trans, so while this is not our first rodeo, my wife came out as an adult, which is why I am here asking other parents of trans kids.
My daughter is of an age where we are starting to explain the concept of puberty to her and the difference between a child's body and a grown ups body. I know that puberty blockers and HRT will be an option for her (Ontario), but I don't have a good idea of what the results would look like to explain to her - I've only personally known trans people who have done HRT as an adult after going through an initial puberty.
What can a MTF child expect out of an HRT induced puberty? I understand that she would develop hips and breasts, and she would not grow facial hair. What happens to the penis and testicles? Do they grow to the same size that she would expect if she allowed a male puberty to happen? Would she still experience erections, wet dreams, ejaculation? If the penis does end up being smaller, does that impact her ability to have a vaginoplasty later in life? From what I understand from my wife's bottom surgery, they turned her penis inside out to create the vagina - would not going through a male puberty before doing HRT affect the end result of a vaginoplasty? Are there any fun surprises for an HRT induced female puberty? Would she be able to save sperm at a sperm bank for if she wants to have kids as an adult? What is the minimum age she can do that, and how long can it be frozen for? Or is there not really an option and she would never be able to have biological kids?
I am hoping to be able to explain what changes she should expect in her body if she does not intervene, and what changes she can expect if she chooses HRT, and then letting her decide as she gets older and closer to puberty. I'm not finding a lot of good information online other than "be sure to affirm your child's gender," etc. The local children's hospital does have a gender clinic, but they don't start to see kids until the very early onset of puberty. Most cis kids are raised with puberty talks at this age, and I don't want to leave her out just because her puberty may be medically assisted.
Thank you all for your help!
