AeroGarden vs Click & Grow Petunias

I unexpectedly bought a Click and Grow on eBay (I was the only bidder). I decided to try it at least once. So, I bought their grow anything pods (3 for $15!) and planted dwarf petunias (Survival Garden Seeds). I immediately planted the same seeds in a Harvest Elite 360.

These photos are from day 4. AG is clearly ahead. Germination might be different because C&G pods have embedded time-released fertilizer and I don’t add nutrients to AG until I see true leaves (or roots extending below the cone basket).

I’m going to keep comparing the progress, but I‘m already convinced that the C&C plants won’t live to maturity. They’re confined to the space of a 2” nursery pot and I wonder if they’ll become completely root bound before they bloom.

I have 2” net pots that fit in the C&G. If/when the petunias fail, I might put an airstone in the tank and grow something decorative in leca.

My daughter thinks I need an intervention

I’m rearranging my plants; here‘s how things look so far. I removed the top tier from my two AeroGarden Wall shelves to allow a Bounty full use of its height. I found a microwave cart that can hold a bounty on top and a Harvest slim on the bottom. So, the number of shelves is unchanged. Now, I can see everything without a step stool and I can comfortably accommodate more tall plants. I have two more active AeroGardens that aren’t shown in the picture, plus a couple more with issues that make me only pull them out for seed starting and experiments (issues like the light won’t stay up). I still have to organize my chemicals and seeds and stuff. But, I’m out of steam for today.

In the middle of my efforts, my daughter had the audacity to suggest that I have too much “AeroGarden stuff” and that I’m turning into an addict. Clearly, I must have dropped her on her baby noggin more than I realized because, I’d like to have just a couple more to add variety and to better manage succession planting. Besides, I could stop, if I wanted to.

But, she made me wonder: How would I know If I truly had too many AeroGardens?

Right now, the only things that grow back faster than we eat it are dill and oregano. So there’s minimal waste.

Farm Drain Tube Replacement?

My Farm arrived with a sealed at every bend drain tube. No big deal, it’s just a length of silicone tubing. But, I can’t find tubing that fits. Aquarium tubing is too thin. Everything else I’ve tried is too thick. AeroGarden customer service doesn’t know. I’m not disassembling the thing and returning it for replacement over a little piece of rarely used tubing.

I don’t have the means to accurately measure the inner and outer dimensions, so I’m hoping someone has run into this before and knows what size of tubing will work.

Question those who’ve grown Orange Hat tomatoes

I have Orange Hats growing for the first time (because of other Reditors’ comments on how well they grow and taste). Generally, I prune tomato suckers and pinch off the first blooms, because that’s what all my ancestors have done since the dawn of the tomato age. But, Google’s AI overview says not to prune Orange Hats and my seed packet doesn’t offer any guidance.

So, I’m wondering, do actual people bother pruning Orange Hats? Is my pinching off the first blooms an outdated holdover from dirt gardening practices?

I am a little concerned because, as I was shaking them for pollination, I noticed that it’s extra humid in there.

Edit: Thanks for the fast and good advice. As I get older, I’m questioning a lot of my “I’ve always done it this way” habits.

AeroGarden website is having a big sale

Some things are regular price, but some have big discounts and free bonuses.

I bought a Sprout and seed starter kit and they added a free 6 pod Pesto Basil pack and 6 pod grow anything pack at checkout - it all cost less than the regular price of the Sprout alone.

I really want to go back and get a clearance priced Farm 12 XL, but I don’t have space for another one.
