Hotspot gaming suddenly broken after a year of no issues

I’ve been gaming on a Verizon hotspot for about a year with no major problems, but recently I started having connection issues out of nowhere.
Main issues:
Trouble connecting to game servers
Games sometimes take forever to fully connect online
Occasional lag spikes
The weird thing is once I finally get into a server, gameplay is usually mostly fine aside from random spikes.
A VPN actually helps fix some of the connection/server issues, but it destroys my speeds sometimes (like 30 Mbps down to 3 Mbps).
It feels like something changed recently with Verizon hotspot routing or traffic handling because this all started suddenly after being stable for a long time.
Anyone else dealing with this or know a fix besides using a VPN?
