To aspect or not to aspect

Hello everyone! I am a first time player and I’ve already gone through most of the core book and some of the supplementary books. I’ve already decided I’m going to be running a mage but having looked through most of the books I feel spirits are a bit broken. Full disclosure I am a player who enjoys min/maxing. I enjoy being very good at a handful of things and being bad or entirely closed off from a lot of other things my experience as a player has also reinforced this as it lets my fellow players shine in ways my pc can’t.

Thing is I don’t really like how strong the spirits are and kinda want to completely ignore that but I’m worried that if I choose an aspected spell caster I’m needlessly gimping my character for relatively small gains.

I know I get +1 magic but how useful is that really? Can I still fulfil my role as the possibly only mage in the group if I’m aspected as a spell caster? Do I have any tools against other mage’s spirits or will I just essentially be a second rate magic user if I don’t use spirits?

Having a large initial spell pool is neat but it doesn’t seem like new spells are very expensive at all tho I do know higher magic increases max spells.
