Why do so many lawyers advise AGAINST law?
Every single person I’ve spoken to who went to law school and is or was practicing at one point has advised me against going and practicing. I remember asking lawyers 10 years ago when I was in undergrad and got the same answer I do now as a 29F with a lot more work and life experience. Mind you, this is right at the start of the conversation before any questions are asked about the different elements of life that could help or hinder my capacity to do it.
I find it irritating because on the one hand, yes grueling hours and debt burden are very real, but on the other, it feels like projection. I’m studying for the lsat and now feel like I’m just doing it in spite of everyone’s advice.
A lot of people say, you can find a way to do what you want without a law degree. But I wonder how being in those rooms, having the knowledge, meeting people in and out of law school, practicing for a bit etc. actually was part of the path that helped them pivot into another side of law, business, or something else.
I’d be curious to hear from lawyers, students, and applicants at a similar stage with law school.
