Why they’re called kears instead of keys

My son and I are playing this together and were wondering why they’re called “kears” instead of keys.

We noticed that the kears go in upside down compared to how a key would work, and then we noticed the top part is literally a gear.

So it’s a key-gear. Kear.

Not sure if this is common knowledge but we thought it was neat.
