Adjusting speed and tempo

I’m adjusting the speed in my workouts to include short bursts of high intensity jumps like DUs and then try to go back to a steady jump pace. I highly recommend it if you can already jump steady for a long period of time. It will build your cardiovascular endurance like nothing else.

Early morning jump season

During the summer, I like to get up early to jump during sunrise. Morning coffee, 25 minute jump session, and sunrise is the best way to start the day, I highly recommend you give it a try.

25 minute morning jump session

I took three days off from any exercise to let my feet rest and body rest. Holy cow, it made a huge difference, In this first jump season back, I had more spring to my jump. Good reminder to rest up those 👣.

Early morning 25 min jump rope session

Despite having sore feet when I wake up, I’m still jumping every morning for 25 minutes. Today I was locked in and got into a flow state pretty quickly so I worked on some speed drills.

Adding speed variations to improve cardio

The great thing about jump rope is how it can really improve your cardiovascular conditioning. One thing I recommend is adding moments of high intensity movements before going back to a steady jump rope pace. It really tests your cardio. I’m finding myself gassing out early, so this is something I’m going to do for the rest of the summer. Give it a try to test your conditioning as you practice.

Jump Rope Meetup - Vancouver, BC

I finally left my backyard and attended a local Jump Rope Meetup and got to jump with the organizer who I follow on Instagram @jumping_jacqz. She’s a great follow if you like Jump Rope content. She runs the @jumpropevancouver meetup every month and provides extra ropes so anyone in the public can try. Unfortunately, I don’t think she’s on Reddit, but I’m trying to get her to join this subreddit.

It’s so nice to jump with others. I highly recommend you check to see if there is a jump rope group in your city. If not, create one. Remember, if you jump, they will come!

Tips for finding correct jump rope hand placement

Here’s a side & front profile to show how to find the correct rope size and hand placement. I like to keep my hands about shoulder width apart and close to my body during a standard jump. I find it the best hand placement to learn all the moves, especially the crossover. Less arm movement = more efficiency and more wrist action.

With one foot in the middle of the rope, the top of my handles are mid chest. To get my hands close to my body, I tilt my elbow up which you can see in the first side profile. This is a good tip to get your hands close to your body. I don’t see many people doing it, but give it a try next session. Tilt those elbows up.

Breaking in a new $11 rope

After using the same rope for several months, the middle part that hits the ground got weaker. This caused the rope to curl so I kept tripping up on certain moves. I finally cut a new rope to size and it made a huge difference. I can feel the weight in the middle of the rope again which gives much better control.

The rope is called Nevertoolate on AliExpress. It’s a PVC rope 5mm, and it costs about $11. Before I was paying about $30 for exact same style rope on Amazon.

I think it comes directly from China so it’s not as fast as Amazon. This time I bought it in bulk (5) so I have extra on hand. To get kinks out, I put it in hot water before a jump session, that helps straighten it out. I hope this info helps.

Early morning sunrise jump rope training sessions

There’s nothing like jumping first thing in the morning during sunrise on the weekend. It’s like recharging a battery. Unfortunately, the clouds came in,but I was in flow so I kept jumping.

Switching to flat sole shoes

My left foot constantly hurts so I asked AI to recommend shoes for jump rope. It recommended cross trainers with a flat stable sole and low profile design. So I bought a pair off Amazon and this is my first session with them. I got the Reebok Nano X5.

Defiantly feels different than the ASIC running shoes I used before. It will takes some time to adapt but hopefully this solves my left foot issue. 🙏🏾

Early morning jump rope drills

I’ve been getting up early to jump rope first thing in the morning around 5:30am. It’s so quiet and peaceful at that time. Here are some of the moves I’m practicing everyday to improve my timing, move variations, and stamina.

Footwork up close

After I learned the boxer step, I added this toe tap move that helps me keep my jumps and feet in time, usually to music. Here’s a close up to see what it looks like. Then I learned to time alternate hand crossovers to the toe tap which requires perfect sync between the hands and feet. When it comes together, it’s a feeling of flow. Try this next time you jump.

Also, I’m learning a new video editing software and I’m practicing on jump rope footage so expect a lot more videos soon. Slow motion videos are coming next, let me know if there are any moves you want to see in slow mo.
