Managing an overly passionate member
I have a member of my team who is very diligent in his work, really good with details and feels highly accountable with everything that he does. On paper this seems like heaven-sent as the work gets done. With highly repetitive work, he’s perfect. However, these same traits also make him very inflexible to changes and ambiguity in the workplace. He has high anxiety from overthinking things and that spills over to his relations at work. People find him exhausting to work with, tends to overexplain on every detail, and makes things seem bigger than they are. He feels too emotionally attached with his work.
I want to transition him from doing overly repetitive work towards something more strategic, the type where you lead decisions and initiate negotiations with counterparties. I’m at a loss on where to start things with him.
