Homebrew Kensei for th revised 2024 Monk

My DM has been revising certain subclasses. I played the kensei Monk in 5E. I had fun with the class. But, we all know it was lacking. We've been brain storming and play testing some of our homebrew for the 2024 Kensei Monk. We've only had two sessions, and I'm having fun. But the DM is worried about the higher levels of play. Especially with the buff the baseline Monk has gotten for dnd 5.5. We also based the kensei subclass features around water.

Level 3 — Path of the Kensei

Kensei Weapons

At 3rd level, choose:

  • one melee weapon that lacks the Heavy property,
  • and one ranged weapon.

These become your Kensei Weapons.

Whenever you gain a Kensei feature at 6th, 11th, or 17th level, you may choose one additional weapon to become a Kensei Weapon.

Your Kensei Weapons:

  • count as Monk weapons for you,
  • may use Dexterity for attack and damage rolls,
  • and may be drawn or stowed as part of an attack you make with them.

Weapon Mastery

Whenever you finish a Long Rest, choose one Weapon Mastery property for each of your Kensei Weapons from among the mastery properties available to that weapon.

You may use those mastery properties while wielding your Kensei Weapons.

Level 3 — Kensei Styles

At the start of your turn, you may adopt one Kensei Style, which lasts until the start of your next turn.

Dead Calm

The Kensei stills themselves like a windless sea, allowing attacks to pass harmlessly by.

While using this style:

  • if you have moved at least 10 feet this turn, you gain a +2 bonus to AC until the start of your next turn.

Raging Torrent

The Kensei abandons restraint, building pressure through relentless attacks.

While using this style:

  • once per turn, when you hit with a Kensei Weapon attack, you may deal additional damage equal to your Martial Arts die.

Undertow

The Kensei manipulates momentum like a crashing tide dragging enemies off balance.

While using this style:

  • once per turn when you hit a Large or smaller creature with a Kensei Weapon attack, you may move the target 5 feet in any direction.

Level 3 — Deft Strike

Immediately after you hit with a Kensei Weapon attack, you may expend 1 Focus Point to empower the strike.

The attack deals additional damage equal to one roll of your Martial Arts die.

You may use this feature only once per turn.

Level 6 — One With the Blade

Your connection with your weapons deepens.

Your Kensei Weapon attacks:

  • count as Force Damage instead if their normal damage type.

Additionally, once per turn when you hit a creature with a Kensei Weapon attack as part of the Attack action, you may make one Unarmed Strike as part of the same action.

Level 6 — Advanced Kensei Styles

Your mastery over your combat forms evolves.

Dead Calm — Undertow Step

Once per turn, when a creature misses you with a melee attack while Dead Calm is active, you may move up to 10 feet without provoking opportunity attacks.

Raging Torrent — Surging Pressure

While Raging Torrent is active:

The first time each turn you hit a creature with a Kensei Weapon attack after missing an attack earlier in the same turn, the target takes additional damage equal to your Wisdom modifier.

The damage type matches your weapon.

Undertow Improvement

The forced movement granted by Undertow increases to 10 feet.

This is where the DM has issues and it's understandable.

Level 11 — Perfect Tempo

You achieve a state of absolute martial flow.

As a Bonus Action, you may expend 3 Focus Points to enter Perfect Tempo, which lasts for 1 minute.

Perfect Tempo ends early if you are Incapacitated.

While Perfect Tempo is active:

  • your Kensei Weapon attacks deal additional damage equal to your Wisdom modifier once per turn,
  • your movement does not provoke opportunity attacks,
  • once per turn, you may reroll one missed attack roll made with a Kensei Weapon,
  • your Kensei Weapon attacks score a critical hit on a roll of 19 or 20,
  • once on each of your turns when you take the Attack action using a Kensei Weapon, you may make one additional Kensei Weapon attack,
  • you may benefit from two Kensei Styles simultaneously,
  • Deft Strike deals additional damage equal to two Martial Arts dice instead of one.

Level 17 — Avatar of the Kensei

Your body, weapon, and spirit move as one.

While Perfect Tempo is active:

  • your Kensei Weapon attacks score a critical hit on a roll of 18–20,
  • you may benefit from all three Kensei Styles simultaneously,
  • when you use Stunning Strike through a Kensei Weapon attack, the attack may originate from within the weapon’s normal or long range,
  • you may use Deft Strike without expending Focus Points a number of times equal to your Wisdom modifier during each use of Perfect Tempo.

We are struggling with levels 11 - 17. And we are open to ideas. Because what we have so far doesn't flow. And it's a lot. The DM really wants the Kensei Monk to make more weapon attacks, hence tthe deft strike update at levels 11-17. And the crit range being lowered. But, Flurry of blows is now three attacks as a bonus action. And this just seems like a lot.
