Lost our sweet GSD to hemangiosarcoma
Last night we lost our 8 year old sweet German shepherd girl. Hardest thing I’ve ever had to do.
She had been on and off lethargic all week. Eating some days, only chicken and rice others. She’d been favoring her back paws. She wanted to play, but wasn’t really able to. She just looked sad. So, we brought her in to the vet last night. Her gums were basically white and she was severely anemic. They did an abdominal X-ray which was basically unreadable because she was full of fluid the vet assumed was blood. We got transferred to an emergency vet to assumably get her spleen removed.
Once at the emergency vet, they did an ultrasound on her and found 2 masses on her spleen and an incredible amount of blood in her abdomen. These masses could’ve been hemangiomas or hemangiosarcomas, but we wouldn’t know until they did surgery. We chose to do a chest X-ray to see if there were any spots on her lungs, which would indicate towards cancer and help determine next steps. Unfortunately, there were multiple small spots on her lungs. This meant the splenic tumors were cancer and the worst kind. We ultimately decided it wouldn’t be worth putting her through the pain of surgery.
Our girl was a WARRIOR and fought until the bitter end. We could see it in her eyes she was fighting so hard and her body was telling her no.
We are incredibly heartbroken because she didn’t deserve this and we felt helpless. She was ALWAYS happy and wanting to play.
