When did England consider the colonists American?

I’m way behind, both in books and show (show, up through S7 but I’ve read the posts here). 🤷‍♀️ I’m a few chapters into Echo and as William is entering into battle, the “other side” is referred to in the text as “Americans.”

I recall learning as a child (US) that Paul Revere yelled out “the British are coming” but later learning that was incorrect because a) he would’ve said “the Regulars (maybe Redcoats?) are coming and b) he wouldn’t have said “British” to mean “those other people.”

Because of that, I noticed the use of “Americans.” Outlander is historical fantasy fiction written by a modern author, so in that sense “Americans” is appropriate. I don’t expect historical accuracy from Herself, but I’m curious if the history buffs here know if “American” or “British” was used in the late 18th century.
