MEXT 2027 applicant from Ukraine — need real advice on finding the right CS/AI lab in Japan

Hello everyone, I'm a Software Engineering graduate from Ukraine, currently applying for the MEXT Research Student scholarship (2027 intake). My research interest is AI-based interpretation of neural signals — specifically building software systems that could help people who cannot speak, and potentially support people living with neurological conditions like OCD. This comes from genuine personal curiosity and lived experience, not just academic interest.

I'm trying to find the right supervisor and would love advice from people with firsthand experience:

  1. Which universities or labs in Japan are known for being genuinely international-student-friendly in CS/AI? (Currently considering NAIST, JAIST, Osaka, Kyushu, Tokyo Tech)
  2. Has anyone worked under a professor in BCI, neural signal processing, or AI assistive technology? Specific recommendations very welcome.
  3. Any red flags when evaluating a professor or lab culture before applying?

Lab culture matters a lot to me — I'm looking for a supportive supervisor, not a high-pressure environment. Honest experiences and DMs are very welcome.
