MEXT university recommendations route

Hi everyone,

I am a student currently pursuing a Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA). I want to pursue a Master's degree in Japan. I applied for the MEXT Scholarship through the Embassy Recommendation route but unfortunately was not selected.

I would now like to apply through the University Recommendation route. Could anyone please guide me on:

How to contact professors at Japanese universities?

When is the right time to start contacting them?

Any tips on what to include in the first email?

I would really appreciate any advice or personal experiences. Thank you!

which is best for mext JLPT N5 VS NAT N5

"Hey guys, just wanted to give you a quick update. For some reasons, I won't be able to take the JLPT N5 exam, so I'm planning to give the NAT N5 instead. However, I have a doubt—what if the embassy gets confused during the MEXT scholarship selection and chooses a JLPT N5 student over me? Does anyone know how this works?"

Is it difficult that a pannel would choose a humanities (English literature) - Research track - for MEXT ? The 'why japan ? ' part is well elaborate , However , I've heard that they favour Stem candidates, and it doesn't seem quite fair for us humanities' candidates to go against tech ones .

how does selection happen after written exams for the research track ? do they invite whoever passes the exam to the interview ? or rather invite based on your documents + exam score ?

MEXT Research student second screening

I just passed the first screening for the MEXT Research Student scholarship through the Japanese Embassy, and I'm really happy.

How worried should I be about the second screening? I didn't contact any professors before applying. Has anyone here been accepted without securing a supervisor in advance?

I'd really appreciate hearing about your experiences.

Preparing for MEXT University Track

Hello everyone, I hope you guys are doing good. I'm in Vietnam. I've graduated since the September of last year and I'm aiming for a scholarship for a Master Degree in English. A little bit about my profile:

  • I graduated with a "Good" classification (Excellent/Distinction) in Business English from a top economics university, GPA 3.43/4.00.
  • IELTS 7.0 (2025)
  • HSK 3 (2021)
  • Participated in a volunteer activity for a running event + interned for an activity at a government/state agency (can request a certificate of confirmation if needed).
  • No scientific research competitions or published articles, but I have a Graduation Thesis (score 9/10), and my performance in the Scientific Research Methodology course—which involved a project similar to actual scientific research—was also quite good (I don't know if this part can be included).
  • Have internship experience at several different companies.

I'm chasing the BA role currently. However due to the raising of AI, I think that following major that are not focus more on IT but on the mix of Business and IT are more favorable for me (However I also choose some management/business major to suit my profile more). I also attached my university list below. Here are some points that I'm wondering:

  1. When applying for a Master program in a University, do I need to contact professors before officially applying into the university?
  2. If contacting professors is needed, then what should I attached in the email and do I need to mention about any scholarships at this time?
  3. Can I mention all the information of my profile in the CV and send it to the professors along with the first email cause my current CV is concentrating only on BA role and related skills?
  4. When contacting professors, can I contact many professors in the same departments or 1 is enough?
  5. Is there any appropriate amount of university that I should apply in a period of time? or is there any strategy for this period as I have two ways of major to apply?
Classification School Department/Major
Dream School Kyoto University i-MBA; East Asia Sustainable Economic Development Studies; International Course in Urban and Regional Development; Social Informatics (First choice)
Target School Kobe University KIMAP in Management; KIMAP in Economics
Target School APU Graduate School of Management & Graduate School of Asia Pacific Studies
Target School Keio University Graduate School of System Design and Management
Safety School University of Aizu Graduate Department of Information Technologies and Project Management

Research student → Master's? How does the process work?

I'm planning to become a research student at a Japanese university, but I'm a bit confused about what happens after that.
From what I understand, being a research student isn't the same as being enrolled in a master's program. During that time, I'll work with a professor, attend seminars, and prepare for the master's entrance exam.
What I'm wondering is:
What is the typical path from research student to master's student?
Do I have to take an entrance exam even if I'm already a research student?
How long does it usually take to transition?
Any advice or things you wish you had known before becoming a research student?
I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone who has gone through this process. Thanks!

What is allowed at exam venue

Can I carry my smartphone and a bag to the exam venue? Or will I have to come only with documents and pen for the exam?

Like phones may be kept outside in some place at venue during exam or is totally prohibited? I need my phone for booking cabs, since I would be coming alone for the exam.

I am an applicant from India.

MEXT Mathematics A exam. is it fill in answers or multiple choice?

Hello, I was invited to the MEXT written exams, and the email says I will take Mathematics A. I checked the official past paper, and it says: “Answer the following questions in the corresponding boxes on the answer sheet.” The questions have boxes like [1-1], [1-2], etc.

Does this mean the Math A exam is fill-in-the-answer, where we write the final number/expression in the boxes, or are there multiple-choice options somewhere on the actual answer sheet?

Im from Kosovo.

My interview experience (Mongolian, KOSEN applicant)

Hello! I thought that i should share my interview experience for my fellow mongolian applicants. The interview was on july 1st for kosen, and my interview was at 10am, but they told me to arrive 5 mins early. That day, there was a lot of traffic jam, and i arrived at the embassy guard post at around 9:50. There were 2 japanese men in blue stripe buttoned shirt and red ties, checked my documents, and let me through a metal detector even though i had phone (which it beeped), told me it was fine and proceed. The waiting lobby was nice, with 4 one seater sofas, and a nice wooden table with flowers. There were 2 glass rooms on the left, one with a previous candidate still giving their interview, and one with 2 japanese women doing their office job, talking and laughing along. After waiting for few mins, the previous candidate was escorted to exit and they took 1 or 2 mins to continue write something on paper and organize their documents. There were only me and one male candidate in the waiting room, and the female japanese interviewer called me in. I entered the interview room and bowed, then sat at the chair. It was a small office style room, with one basic working table, with two japanese interviewers, one male with stern face, in his 40s, and one female with small young kind face. They almost scrambled through my documents, and the lady asked "are you nervous?" In cheerful tone. I told her "yeah, a little bit". The first question was in english, asked by the man, "why did you choose this major (my first cjoice was computer network)". I was very nervous at the beginning, and stuttered, and barely produced a simple english answer. And then he asked me whether i can introduce myself in japanese. I introduced myself by saying my name, age, that i want to study in japanese kosen, and my japanese was still not good and i want to study japanese. The man corrected my grammar a bit and nodded. And then the lady asked me how i learned japanese in mongolian. I told her that i learned it by hobby, by internet and watching tv lessons. Then the lady asked "why kosen?" In mongolian. I answered "in my thought, network engineering, or server admin is a job that depends mainly on prictical experience. Even though university is good, i think kosen is better because of their hands-on experience along with factual knowledge". They all noted something in fast japanese on paper. And then lady asked "whats your hobby?". I said my hobby was cooking and origami. She told me "wow! Origami? How did you learn it?", i told "i learned it by watching a youtube tutorial of a channel named jo nakashima", she told "whats your latest creations in origami?, i told "my latest creations are flowers, and then also i crafted an 8 legged spider", which made the lady even more impressed. And then the lady asked "for kosen, you would be needing to probably be located at a countryside or small city, so its not like ulaanbaatar. How are you planning to get used to the new atmosphere?", i answered "its alright, i plan on getting used to it by making friends, and keeping in touch with my family constantly by video calling them". Ans then she asked "what are your highschool achievements?" I answered "i used to participate in singapore and asian math olympiad every highschool year, and i earned 2 bronze medals in 9th, and 11th grade, and homorable mentions in 10th, 12th grades. And also i got honorable mention in an essay competition" and she nodded along, reviewing my reccomendation letter. She said "wow, you are good at math, huh..." (a very japanese dialogue but translated to mongolian), and then she asked "have you applied to any other scholarships", which i said no. Oh also she asked "is your family fine with you going to japan?", i answered "yes, my family fully supports me". The interview was like 8 or 10 mins, and the lady told me the interview was over and i was free to go. I bowed at the exit and went away.

So, except the first question, the interview was almost all in mongolian, which surprises me. Also, i wonder if it went smoothly or not, considering i stuttered and stuck on the first question... it was kind of like a fun dynamic though, i got nervous by looking at the stern man's face and then eased myself up looking at the kind lady's face lol. Thats my interview experience, i hope i pass the interview

just blabing my worries about the interview

Hello! I’m from Brasil and I had my interview today. It was mostly in english and I think I did a decent job.

But I always see everyone saying that everyone that got the scholarship gets “pressured” during the interview with uncomfortable questions. I didn’t feel they did that with me, sometimes more in depth questions about my methodology but nothing as I saw online.

That is making me really worried that they just didn’t think I was worth the time. Idk. I got out of there confident but lost it very quickly. How did it go for you guys?

Also if it’s worth something, they said the results will take around 1-2 weeks.

I’m so anxious and nervousssss omg
