The writers realized how much of a fuck up it was to kill Adam in season 1 that they had to make Lute schizophrenic to bring him back.
You can literally have Lute go "This is for Adam, This is what he would have wanted" to explain her motives instead of "She is schizophrenic " and nothing would have changed.
He is there only for the fanservice, We won't get any meaningful info about his time in the garden with his family or his time in heaven from him because he is quite literally a hallucination from Lute who only saw him as the awesome demon killer.
It's like the writers had a eureka moment where they realized they could do more with the first man so they had to bring him back but they already killed him, and sinner Adam isn't becoming canon because Viv said he isn't coming back so just go with the lamest possible option.
All that potential wasted.
