thoughts on the historical collections (or lack thereof)
I saw some discourse about this on an American Girl doll video I was watching and I keep thinking about it.
I got Molly and Emily as a child, and have very very little of their collection, since they were retired the year I got them. I always wished I had more of their collection, but it’s expensive to get the things I want.
The video had a segment talking about how it was advertised that girls would get one doll usually, building up their collections slowly. Because obviously, the clothes and sets are expensive. Discontinuing and rereleasing the dolls with limited collection killed the whimsey of the historical line because little girls used to be able to gradually build it up through birthday gifts, Christmas presents, whatever other special days had gifts. Treating the characters in the line as “temporary” ultimately hurt this business model because you can’t build up a collection like that, your doll is missing part of her world. My Molly and Emily are missing their dogs, their pajamas, their beds, pretty much everything. And that part of the video made me realize that I could have built up their collection more, if it had stayed around.
I know it’s a very basic thought, but I can’t stop thinking about it lol. I’m currently at work but I’ll find the video once I’m home, because it was really good. But I was wondering what other’s thoughts were on this take.
