AITA for not wanting to use a phone that was given as a gift?
to add context to this post:
i just finished my exams and was really excited and glad that i finished, later on during the day the guy that mother is dating came over and handed me this huge box and told me that it was a little gift for passing my exams i found it really sweet and a really thoughtful, because i was living life without a phone only an old Toshiba laptop from 2019 that i wiped and installed Linux onto just so that i could live just a little bit longer, but enough about the computer, the box was huge reaching up to mu knees it was fastened with some zip ties and some rope just to keep it together he then handed me a knife so i could start opening the box, or boxes i should say because it was one box with like 6 other boxes then the phone
i was really excited that i finally got a phone, i could finally call then and take pictures that would last me a life time, and play game that would usually make my laptop sound like it was trying to cool the sun,i did find it a bit weird that it was already set up, but after like 40 - 50 mins of using the device there was this notification saying that the phone was updated and requires a reboot to be fully up to date. i followed what it told me and reboot the phone, after it was updated there was another notification basically saying that my IT holder have full permission to the device and could delete,install,or reset passwords on the device, seeing that notification got me really scared and to be honest i was panicked because knowing that some random IT person could gain access to all my accounts and changed the passwords was really frightening, i called my mother but she payed me no mind i kept reading the terms and conditions and the more i read the more i felt like i was being watched again it felt sickening this device was not fully mine sure i had the phone i mu hand and could install games and log into my accounts but i was not the owner its like borrowing your brothers phone but they are looking at what you are doing 24/7. at this point i didn't even want the phone anymore so went to tell my mother that i don't want the phone.she asked why so i told her that i'm not the owner of the phone ans someone could reset all my passwords and install and delete things on the phone, she then told me "what do you have to hide", i told her that i had nothing to hide but i don't want someone to have access to my accounts and the device without my permission.she the proceed to take the phone away from me to "fix it" but she didn't do anything that could help but the thing that i found really frustrating was that she started to blame me for what has happened to the phone. after she tried to "fix it " she the gave me and said just reset it so o tried but i didn't have access to reset it and when i tried to remove all my accounts it kept saving them and so i factory rest it from the recovery menu because that was the only way that i could reset.
i need a lil help here,so am i the asshole?
