Hi everyone, I'm looking for some advice and direction.
My family runs a small shop selling all kinds of household items, much everything in a house like pails, large floor mats, stools, pots, pans, mops.... etc. We also rented a small warehouse: a medium size open space with like three levels of shelving area.
However, I realized that there is a problem with the warehouse, everything is so messy and placed in all sorts of location, there is also no labeling and the only way to find the items efficiently is through experience (basically memorizing where things are). This is what I have experienced as I help my family at the warehouse during my holidays. Although my parents would not like me to continue running the business, as a student learning programming, I'd really like to help use my skill sets to improve the situation.
Before jumping into anything, I want to first understand:
- Where should I start learning about warehouse optimization or inventory?
- How should one go about planning where to each items should be? Would it be a good idea to shift everything around?
- What kind of applications or tools would actually be useful for a small business like this to implement?
I'm not trying to overengineer things, I just want to make the workflow smoother and gradually introduce some structure. Hopefully in the future simple tech solutions too.
Would really appreciate any advice, resources, or even examples from your own experience. Thank you in advance!
