I would not use foundation chain when the second row has some sort of variation (shells etc.), but can I use it every time the second row consists solely of sc, dc or hdc? Is there something else to consider within the pattern? I see no downsides (the end result is also IMHO cleaner with foundation chain), so why don't all the patterns use it? What am I missing?

(Of course if the length needs to be modified, like leaving the turning chains out.)

Writing this as I once again struggle crocheting dcs into a starting chain...
