boutique AM IR to consulting ?
Getting into Oliver Wyman?
Hi everyone,
I’m currently working at a boutique asset manager in London in a broad investor relations / client services / marketing-style role and I’m starting to think seriously about pivoting into consulting — ideally financial services consulting.
By the time I’d likely apply, I’d have around 2 years of experience. My role is quite broad and includes things like:
client communications,
reporting,
presentations/decks,,
business development support,
fund/admin operational exposure,
working with senior stakeholders.
I have completed IMC and have become more interested in the strategic/commercial side of financial services rather than purely operational work.
I think what appeals to me about consulting is:
presenting/ communicating skills, more exposure, pace.
I know consulting is competitive, so I’m trying to be realistic. I’d love honest advice on:
whether this pivot is actually doable from my background,
what firms I should realistically target,
whether FS consulting would value boutique AM experience,
and what gaps I’d need to close (case prep, technicals, modelling etc).
Would really appreciate any advice from people who’ve made a similar move or worked in consulting recruiting.
Thanks!
