How difficult is PSYCH 248 at Hunter really? What should I realistically expect?

Hey everyone, I’m planning on taking PSYCH 248 (Statistical Methods in Psychological Research) soon as part of the psych major and I wanted to ask people who already took it what the class is actually like at Hunter.

I’ve read the course description already, but I’m still trying to understand the real experience of the course from students themselves.

I know it’s a statistics/research methods class, but I’m wondering:

  • Is it heavily math-based?
  • Are you constantly solving equations/problems by hand?
  • Or is it more about interpreting research and understanding what the statistics mean?
  • How difficult was it compared to other psych courses?
  • What made the class challenging?
  • What should I brush up on beforehand?
  • Does the lab portion make the course harder or more manageable?
  • Were the writing assignments/research papers a big part of the grade?
  • Any professors you’d recommend (or avoid)?

I’m honestly not a “math person,” so I think the idea of the course sounds more intimidating to me than it maybe actually is. At the same time, I’m trying to mentally prepare myself and get a realistic idea of the workload and difficulty before enrolling.

Any advice, experiences, survival tips, or even reassurance would honestly help a lot. Thanks in advance.
