Brain training apps and maximising cognitive performance?

What are your opinions on brain training apps (Luminosity and other such), and do you feel that they can help maximise cognitive performance?

I need a sharp mind and fast reaction times for my job, and I have included 10 minutes of brain training apps in my morning routine for some time. Are they actually doing anything though? I'm a bit tired of them, but if they are of benefit?

Where they fit in -

I do my 10 minutes meditation (minimum), then have coffee. I do the 10 mins of brain training at the start of the coffee, then 15 mins of self improvement reading after that. Maybe I'd be better off extending the reading? Or introducing journalling.
