Regarding drive off Ireland

Hi there,

So I work in a petrol station and as you can imagine people either end up forgetting they have fuel or forget their wallet. An incident happened to me specifically which has caused an issue in work.

A lady came in, her card declined, tried another card, it declined. She said she would come back and to take details, so I did. As instructed prior to me (years prior) I took down; Name, Vehicle Registration, Time, Date and Phone number. Which I rang while in store.

Turned out the women had blocked the phone number and basically refused to come back.

Now this is the tricky bit.
We got a message saying “Guys been on the phone with a Garda he told me that if we let a customer leave without paying for the fuel we are responsible for letting them go the customer. Therefore the staff member needs to pay. If the customer can’t pay Garda needs to be called”

Now nowehere in my contract does it say they can take away from wages, yet they are intending to. I’ve been refusing and refusing but they are insisting it is their rights

Is
A) the Garda right
B) my workplace correct in wages

I understand this is a common thing in other petrol stations in regards to taking numbers and registration
