Home ownership
Any idea how much a solicitor would charge to put a married couples home into the name of one only. Currently joint. No drama.

Hi, we will shortly be selling our family home due to divorce and splitting the proceeds. Our solicitor told us that we each need our own solicitor — one acting as the primary solicitor (charging around 75% of the legal fees) and the second solicitor charging the remaining part.
I just wanted to ask if this is normal practice? Some friends told me that one solicitor for both parties should be enough, so I’m a bit confused .
Honestly still in shock writing this.
My partner got terminated today. Six months in, last day of his probation, and they just handed him a letter. No reason. Nothing. Not even a conversation. No reason on the letter.
What makes it worse is he left a permanent job for this. They headhunted him, promised him a great role, good salary, exciting project. From day one the place was a mess — no HR, no proper structure, no clear job roles, nothing. But he kept his head down and worked hard because that's just who he is.
Then today out of nowhere — gone. No warnings, no performance reviews, no feedback ever. Just a letter with no explanation.
He is really struggling. He is an immigrant who built his career here from scratch and he is now seriously doubting himself. It is hard to watch someone so hardworking go through this.
I have been reading about WRC but honestly don't know if it is even worth pursuing given he was on probation. But six months feels significant and the fact they gave absolutely no reason has to mean something legally, right?
Has anyone actually gone through the WRC process in Ireland? Did it go anywhere? Was it worth the stress?
Any advice would mean a lot right now. Especially from anyone who has been through something similar as an immigrant here. We feel quite alone with this.
Thanks
I’m currently 17 and sitting the leaving cert. I’m turning 18 in about 2 months and my father threatened to kick me out. He’s done the same thing to my older brother so I’m pretty sure he‘s serious. I’ve read up on family law and I’m unsure on the specifics. I’m planning on being in full time education after secondary school so i’m wondering can my father legally kick me out or is he just obligated to financially support me? (Or if he’s obligated to do anything at all)
On the emotional(?) side of things i’m not entirely sure why my father is kicking me out. I make dinner almost every day and generally keep to myself. For reference he kicked my brother out for being untidy and not telling him when he’s going out (when he was 19 almost 20). Anyways both me and my brother have suspicions there’s something mentally wrong with my father but i guess we can be a bit biased. If anyone wants to give an outside opinion you’re more than welcome too. Thanks!
I'm typing this from my phone so I apologise for any typos.
About 5 weeks ago I found a job through a job agency and have been working there for 4 weeks. I didn't get payed for the first week and didn't suspect anything because I was told by others at the time that most jobs make you wait 2 weeks before getting your first paycheck (I should add that this job pays weekly). I now know that this didnt apply to this job as others starting at the same time as me got payed for their first week.
Fast forward to week 2 and I'm expecting to get payed 2 paychecks, yet nothing. I call them and they explain that they can't send me the money because i put in the wrong details and that they've sent me an email attempting to contact me (which they never sent). But fine alright, what's one more week
Week 3 comes around and they send over 2 payslip emails, which I had no way of accessing because they never sent me the password, and 300 euro is deposited into my bank account. At this point im getting worried because although I am currently on emergency tax, 2 weeks worth of pay wouldn't come out to be 300 euro after emergency tax. This happened on a Friday and they are closed for the weekend, so I had to wait until Monday to contact them for an explanation and the password. I eventually got into contact with them and received the password, yet it turns out those two payslips were just one email sent twice.
Over the course of week 3 I send constant non stop emails and phone calls with no reply. I am eventually fed up and contact my manager, who gets contact with them the next day, yet still no response. So I show up to the job agency and they say that I will receive 3 checks this Friday (today)
Today comes around, and I've only received one check and one payslip. I've attempted to contact them via email and phone minutes after the transfer yet its radio silence and theyre once again closed for the weekend.
And that brings us to the present, where im not sure what I should do. Im missing well over 1.5k euro, 2 weeks worth of work and im being advised to send a formal written demand to the workplace on Monday that if I don't receive my money, I will contact revenue. Im not completely sure if what they are doing is completely illegal as in the contract it did state they can delay payments if I put in the wrong bank details, yet they've told me I will receive 3 checks in person.
Is there anything I can do, besides wait until Monday to contact my manager again and go through another week of unsure waiting
Not necesarily consumer law, but misconduct on their part.
Very long story, but im curious to see what the ramifacations would be if a foreign body had conducted illegal surveillence on someone in ireland, for example put cameras and mics in their room, broadcast these images to thousands of people, and along with that subjected them to severe psychological torture, such as telling them they will be tortured/killed slowly, how body parts would be chopped off, they would be burned alive ect. They said all this with joy and happiness.
Along side this they would have told all these people a horrible lie about me that has now put my life in danger, and i genuinely fear for my life as a result of them telling people these lies about me.
Every solicitor i have contacted, as im writing to them i can hear them talking on the radio calling them telling them not to take my case, telling them the same horrible lie theyve told everyone to turn them against me.
I tried to make a statement that my human rights have been violated to the local gardai, however i heard this body talking with them before i arrived and they told the guards under no circumstances are they to let me make a statement, and thats exactly what happened. When i asked to make a report i was removed from the station with force, over simply asking to make a report that i have been psychologically tortured. While outside and on my way to the station i heard them from radios in passing cars, and the people in the cars were staring at me.
After the guards refused to take my report i went to the Mental Health Unit so they would have to make a report, and while i was waiting in A&E there people were standing very close to me and i could hear the radios, and them asking/begging me not to make the report.
Finally i did say all of the above to the hopsital staff and they took it down, but i dont know where to go from here, and im very scared for my life.
Im taking to reddit because im honestly in fear for my life and i dont know what to do, i cant get a single solicitor to look at my case because i know how crazy it sounds, but if i can get someone to help me pull cctv from certain areas/times i can prove everything im saying is the truth.
I have made a complaint to both Fiosru and the european commission, but i am not hopeful to get anything back.
If anyone can please help me, or is able to remove the hissing from a video taken on a mobile to make their radios more clear, please help me. I cant go into details about the case, but what would the outcome be if everything ive said is correct.
Hi all,
I have recently moved out of a rented property in Ireland and my landlord has deducted €400 for cleaning (bedroom + communal bathroom) from my deposit.
I left the property in a reasonably clean condition, having cleaned thoroughly before vacating. The bathroom in question was also communal/shared, not exclusively under my responsibility.
There was no joint check-out inspection, and I have not been provided with any invoice, itemised receipt, or photographic evidence to substantiate either the need for professional cleaning or the amount charged.
As far as I understand RTB standards, landlords must be able to evidence deductions and show that costs are reasonable and directly attributable to tenant responsibility, not assumed or estimated. I am already preparing this for RTB dispute resolution, but I would appreciate input on how similar €300–€500 cleaning claims are typically treated where: the property was left in reasonable condition no inspection was carried out with the tenant present no supporting documentation has been provided From my understanding, “normal turnover cleaning” is not a tenant liability. Any relevant experience or outcomes would be helpfu
Dublin Bus definitely seen it. Any hope I can get that footage?
Moved out of a rented apartment on March 1st and contacted my communal heating/electricity provider (Yuno Energy Heat) to close my account from that date.
They’re refusing to close it unless I get my landlord/agency to confirm my move-out date.
Problem is:
\* My contract was only with the provider, not the landlord
\* The landlord is refusing to get involved and also doesn’t want their details shared
\* The landlord says they have no legal obligation to confirm anything and that the provider shouldn’t be asking for it
I already gave them my move-out date and requested final billing up to that point, but they’re insisting on landlord confirmation before they’ll close the account.
Their response basically says: “we can’t process closure without confirmation from the property.”
I’ve pushed back asking for the legal/regulatory basis for this requirement and told them I’ll escalate a formal complaint if needed.
My question is:
Can a utility/communal heating provider in Ireland actually require landlord confirmation to close an account? Or is this them overstepping?
And if they refuse to close it, is CRU the correct place to escalate?
Any advice appreciated.
Hi,
I know this has been asked before, but I am looking for any advice as I am at the end of my tether.
My mother died five years ago. My father died last year. In his will he left the family home to my sister and I equally.
My sister has been unemployed most of her life and lived at home with mum and dad.
I have given her two options in relation to the house, she can pay me rent for my half, or we can put it on the market and sell it. She couldn't buy me out as she is currently unemployed.
She is basically just ignoring me and presumably hoping I will go away.
I know I should probably contact a solicitor, but I'm not sure what to expect or even if a solicitor can do anything?
Thanks for amy advice!
Good morning all. I know someone I know who claims she was able to extend her stamp 1g residence permit for a third year, but has never given more details beyond that she was able to and that she allegedly was moved to a stamp 1 permit without any employment permit application (she is not in a field that will sponsor). As a fellow third country national, I am curious to know the logistics of this.
I am curious to know if anyone else has had success or knowledge on doing this, and if so, how? I'm in the position of a company not being able to sponsor me, but I would like to remain in Ireland if I'm able. Thank you for any information!
From the get go Irish Water has been a frustrating hemorrhoid to deal with. Nearly 2 years ago, I bought a derelict property in need of waterworks connecting sewage and drinking water to the house. Almost instantly after purchasing the property, I filled out an application to Irish Water. It took me 6 months to get a response. After a tedious year of dealing with them the works have been approved. I made my payment in December, and since then they have postponed the date for the waterworks 2 times, the next date is for next week and that will get delayed as well. The waterworks would require one of the busier roads of my town to be closed for a day. Irish Water gives me the same excuse each time they delay the works. Allegedly, they have had trouble cooperating with the local council to organise the closure of the road. I decided to contact the council myself, and it was revealed to me that there has never been an application submitted for a road closure for my address and that Irish Water has never contacted them in relation to my property.
I am currently renting the home I live in, these delays are costing me a lot of money. The house was derelict and needed to be fully renovated, as of now it’s basically four walls and a leaky roof. I cannot go ahead with renovations until the waterworks are done. There’s always a chance I’ll go homeless despite owning a house. I cannot stand the frustration of waiting any longer. I threatened legal action against the council when they kept on delaying my application for planning permission, and then they instantly approved my application. I am not sure how to go ahead with legal action towards Irish Water. I have no experience in court or dealing with similar matters. Please let me know of anything that might be of help in my situation.
I’ve worked for this business for 4+ years, our old employer (we’ll call him C) sold the business to a large company (we’ll call them B) a couple months ago. C never gave any of us a contract, he was very old school. He said he gave our terms of employment in the financial agreement. B are a UK company who have now started buying independent practices in Ireland.
5 out of 6 of us do not want to sign the contract but are fearful of being fired on those grounds, the 6th will sign the contract after hearing she’ll be promoted to manager. Do we have any leg to stand on if we don’t sign the contract, since we only had terms of employment previously?
Some of the things our draft contract states that we are not happy with are;
Any broken/damaged merchandise (that is always replaced by our suppliers free of charge including delivery) would come out of our wages. This feels unfair and redundant as we would be getting a free replacement anyways, it feels like more of a punishment for something thats guaranteed to happen every now and then due to the nature of the job.
We would have to sign over all personal data including our social media or any and all forms of ID.
We could be sent to another practice (in a different country) at their requirement.
Part-time and full-time staff would have to work 48-hour work weeks at B’s requirement (full-time staff don’t even work 48-hours)
We have to consent to be examined by a medical practitioner of their choice as they wish (double checked and it’s not for drug tests or anything like that)
Even with a sick cert for however many days we would have to ring our manager before 4:45pm everyday to confirm we will not be in the following day (I’ve never taken a sick day in the years I’ve been there but this sounds excessive)
They will switch us from our standard weekly pay, with a Christmas bonus and a pay rise every year to monthly pay, no Christmas bonus and will only give a pay rise if minimum wage exceeds our current pay.
Please give any advice, I’m not sure where to start with my own research.
Hi everyone, I'm helping a coworker with an issue regarding a product she purchased and I'm wondering what the next steps are. She purchased a KitchenAid mixer from their .IE website and it began emitting sparks. She sent it for repairs, and returned with the same issue. She sent it again and when it returned this time it stopped functioning completely.
I advised her to email and ask for a refund as she does not even want a replacement anymore after their failed repairs. As far as I understand according to eu consumer law she is entitled to one if the repairs are not able to be completed in a timely manner and without significant disruption to her ( she had to take unpaid time off work to deal with the courier for collection and delivery 4 times in total)
Customer service rang and offered another repair which she refused, and then stated she couldn't get a refund. She emailed to get that in writing and they responded yet again claiming she is only entitled to another repair, and that 14 days has passed so a refund is not available. This seems to contravene EU consumer rights.
Would small claims court in Ireland be the next appropriate step in order to secure her refund?
Hey,
So this isnt me, this is my sister but she doesnt use reddit.
The short of it is her company does bike to work, shes worked there years but never availed of it, decided last month to apply and she had two options, full payment from her next months salary or broken down over 12 months, she chose 12 months and this is verified in the completion order through her company portal.
Her company have taken the full amount of the bike from her wages this month and after some back and forth with her payroll section and bike to work area they say they acknowledge the mistake but said theres nothing they can do.
She's now down the vast majority of her months wages now and cant afford her bills
Is there any legal recourse here?
Edit: thanks everyone for your comments, ive provided them to her, hopefully she can get it sorted
Hi,
Is it possible to get a General employment visa for a 12 month contract job.
The job satisfies all needs of a critical skill but only has a 12 month contract.
The solicitor I contacted is asking for a minimum of 24 months. I called the employment visa department they initially said 12 months is ok and they expressed a doubt and asked me to email them.
Does anybody have any experience with this?
Thanks in advance
Long story short I had an operation as a 3 year old, unbeknownst to me, they damaged a nerve which indirectly feeds the vocal cords.
It left me with a weak voice & inability to project my voice or speak for long periods of time- sadly this went unnoticed by doctors & for whatever reason my parents just never seemed to acknowledge it.
Growing up it wasn’t spoken about & indirectly I was told it was just how my voice was. . .
Fast forward 30 years and I see an ENT for one of my own kids. Upon hearing my speaking voice when I’m speaking about my child, he starts asking questions about me, and within minutes he’s asking if he can put a camera down my throat because he’s sure I’ve got an issue.
Turns out I’ve a completely paralysed left vocal cord and tracing back my medical history he believes the operation I had in childhood is responsible because of the area involved & where it runs along that nerve pathway.
Looking online I know the statute of limitations is 2 years or when the child turns 18, they then have 2 years to make a complaint but there’s also a stipulation that you can also have 2 years from ‘the date of which you became aware of the issue and potential negligence’ - which in this case, was a few weeks ago.
I’m wondering if I have any recourse here? The ENT has recommended surgery to potentially help restore function but it’s not guaranteed and if it works it might only be temporary. In such a case I would either need multiple repeated follow ups, or a much more detailed surgery to put in a permanent implant- which I’m guessing my insurance won’t cover because once I claim for anything in regards to this issue, they will surely claim it’s therefore ‘pre-existing’ in any future claims.
I cannot believe that this was not noted at the time or corrected in any way, surely someone had a responsibility?
My wife went to get a tooth filled in September of last year. She immediately noticed the filling was too large and went back at the earliest opportunity about 4 days after that.
At the second appointment the filling was filed down but as time has moved on it has become apparent that the tooth itself was filed down as well and this has created a food trap. This is a minor issue as opposed to the actual problem.
She just went through the last 7+ months in pain and being unable to eat on the side of her mouth with the filling. She decided to try and outlast the pain because the dentist told her to use a sensitivity toothpaste to help. It only got worse. She was trying to get another appointment for about a month before finally getting one 3 weeks ago.
During this appointment a different dentist took an X-ray and told her the filling was too deep. Not only this but the nerve in the tooth is now dead. This dentist told her he needed to consult with the dentist that did the work before proceeding. There was no X-ray taken before the filling for the first appointment.
Cut to yesterday and the surgery's secretary rang her to cancel as the dentist who originally put the filling in has not responded to the second dentist.
3 weeks and a dentist in the same practice didn't bother to meet up and discuss his work. There was also no talk of the next steps in her care either.
Would this be considered negligence on the dentist's behalf?
She only waited so long because the dentist who filled her tooth and filed it down said it would be sensitive for a while after and originally she did feel relief as she was able to actually close her mouth after the second visit.
This dentist is not her usual one either - they only told her this the day before the appointment and considering how hard it is to get an appointment she kept it. Her normal dentist is the one who said the filling was too deep and the nerve was dead. He also told her she needs a root canal or extraction of the tooth.
Has anyone dealt with something similar legally? I think it's ridiculous from the practice and I'm encouraging her to look into it from a legal perspective as it has lowered her quality of life over the past few months and there has been no care plan to correct the shoddy work shared.
TIA for any advice.
Several colleagues went on a work trip recently and some opted to stay on after the completion of the task at their own expense for a couple of days. So for example the task was scheduled for Thursday in a different country, flights went out Wednesday and returned Friday. All accommodation was at the employee's expense and the only days that t&s could be claimed for were Wednesday to Friday. If the cost of accommodation was more than the 24 hour allowance that was on the employee. If the cost of a later return flight was more than the cost of the Friday return flight the difference was on the employee.
So far so normal. Right? Now here's where we are having difficulty. No employee who stayed longer than Friday has gotten any expenses at all. The expenses being offered are from Wednesday evening to close of business Thursday but as yet even that has not been paid. Employees who returned home on the Friday are getting an extra 24 hours t&s than the ones who stayed until Sunday.
What is the legal situation here? Surely two people on a trip to meet an identical need for the same length of time should not be getting different t&s payments? Surely outside of vouched public transport claims all employees should just be getting exactly the same t&s for the trip. There's no complication regarding staying later since that's not included for t&s.
Am I missing something?
