[1972] News Of The World by John Lennon (Earth-152)
In 1971, shortly after the Beatles released the single Too Many People (b/w I Dig Love), John found himself disappointed by the attitude of his former bandmates. Rather than responding with another song, however, he decided to send them a simple letter
>Dear Paul and George,
I expected better from you. I believed that after my departure, we would remain friends, or at least that we wouldn't start publicly fighting with each other. But then you throw something like this at me? “Too Many People,” Paul? I had to listen to it twice just to make sure I had heard what I thought I had heard. As usual, something so subtle that I barely noticed it.
I expected you to reinvent yourselves after my departure, but this only shows that you're still the same, and probably never will change.
After reading the letter, Paul simply threw it away. George, who was with him at the time, retrieved it from the trash and kept it for himself. The letter inspired Run of the Mill, a song directed at John, which was later released on the Beatles' July 1971 LP, When the Wind Is Blowing.
Following the incident, John and Yoko decided to move to New York City, drawn by the city's strong political and cultural scene at the time.
John began recording his new album in November 1971. The sessions produced the single Happy Xmas (b/w How Do You Sleep?), with the latter being another direct response to Paul. Both songs would later appear on the following year's LP.
By the end of the first half of 1972, the album had been completed, containing twelve tracks, alongside a live LP recorded during a 1971 performance with Frank Zappa.
The album was preceded by the single Imagine (b/w Come Together). The latter had originally been recorded during the sessions for the Beatles' Everest album, but John ultimately chose to leave it off the record.
