Double Fantasy (1980 John and Paul collab)

(This serves as a continuation of my Quarrymen series of albums, but also works well as a standalone).

Back to The Egg lends some cohesion to the group again, but it all falls apart after both John and Paul are caught for marijuana in Japan. After a few days in jail, the pair decide the Quarrymen are done and officially dissolve the group.

They then proceed to go on a boating trip around Bermuda, opening up a new burst of creativity. But what to do with no band to record them?

Simple. Do everything, every instrument, themselves.

Double Fantasy by John Lennon and Paul McCartney is an experimental double album that would've released in November, 1980, featuring material from McCartney II, Tug Of War, Double Fantasy, and Milk and Honey.

[1967] Strawberry Fields - The Beatles (Earth-TREE3)

On August 29, 1966, The Beatles ended their 1966 US Tour in Candlestick Park. They had decided to stop touring, due to the chaos brought by their two '66 tours, not being able to hear themselves play due to the crowd, and their music becoming more and more experimental.

The Beatles went on to do their own things. John went go film Richard Lester's How I Won the War, Paul experimented with tapes, George studied sitar with Ravi Shankar, and Ringo spent time with his family. While working on HIWTW, John came up with a song that he originally titled It's Not Too Bad, with the lyric "No one's in my wavelength". The lyrics would be written and revised from there, becoming Strawberry Fields Forever.

The band reconvened in the studio in November to record Strawberry Fields Forever, and a song written by Paul, Penny Lane, for their next single. However, Paul's perfectionism kept getting the better of him as he kept booking studio time for extra overdubs to Penny Lane, delaying the singles release. At that same time, The Beatles became planning their grand follow up to Revolver: Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

A loose concept album about the band performing under an alter ego, the album was said to be so magnificent, it put ███████ to shame. The band recorded many tracks which received many overdubs. One song, A Day in the Life, combined two songs from John and Paul into one masterpiece.

Multiple songs were finished and the Strawberry Fields Forever b/w Penny Lane was due to release in April 1967. However, five days before the singles release, Paul McCartney turned on his radio to hear The Beach Boys latest single: Hereos and Villains. After hearing that it was from the band's new album SMiLE, Paul rushed to the nearest record ship to buy a copy. After listening, Paul called up George Martin, reportable saying "They've done it! They've bloody fuckin' done it!"

The Beach Boys had released SMiLE a couple days earlier. Although a major hit in the UK, staying at #1 until it was beaten out by ███████ in December, it was less of a success in the US, although it would later receive a cult following, and is now seen as one of the greatest albums of all time.

Paul quickly booked more studio time to work on the album. The other Beatles started to get worried about Paul's mental state, and in May basically forced him to take a little vacation. When he got back, Paul would make the announcement that Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band was cancelled.

Sgt. Peppers has become an often talking about subject for music nerds, often being touted as "the greatest album that was never released". Many people have tried to make reconstructions of what they believe the album would have looked like. Some of the tracks would end up on the Yellow Submarine soundtrack in 1969. In 2004, Paul McCartney would release Paul McCartney Presents Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, which contained rerecordings of tracks meant for the album. In 2011, The Sgt. Pepper Sessions box set was released, containing multiple discs of outtakes meant for the album.

Still wanting to use the songs they've written, The Beatles came up with the idea of doing more lo-fi layed back album to soothe their nerves. Some songs, like Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds (renamed Which Dreamed It?) and A Day in the Life used stripped back studio recordings, others, like When I'm Sixty-Four and Piggies were rerecorded over at John's home in Kenwood, while the rest, like Lazy Day, All Together Now, In Littletown, and I Will were brand new. The Strawberry Fields Forever and Penny Lane single was also going to be put on this new album. One song, entitled The Candle Burns, was not originally meant to be put on the album, but John, feeling cheeky, decided to stick at the end unmarked to "scare the shit out of people". This would come to be recognized as the first hidden track.

Strawberry Fields was released in the UK on September 3, 1967, and on September 18 in the US. The album received mix reviews, with critics saying they album felt unfinished and unpolished. Some critics began to pose the question of whether The Beatles had truly lost their mark

Fortunately, they were wrong.

RUBBER REVOLVER / REVOLVER RUBBER (1966)

Holding back some of the tracks from their sessions for their late '65 record (entitled 'Plastic Soul') - the Beatles go all in on an album that confusingly had two titles on the sleeve (Rubber Revolver and Revolver Rubber) - an intentional choice to strip away meaning from the words and focus on the revolutionary music to be found within.

As the best tracks emerge, a side devoid of McCartney number is clearly the best choice song wise, with Lennon's purple patch dominating. To make it up to Paul, John says he can have two songs on a stonking double A Side - 'Got to Get You Into My Life'/'Good Day Sunshine' - the single stalls at number 2, kept off the top spot by Sinatra's Strangers In The Night, and doesn't climb any further.

The album is released late July and is an immediate sensation.

Wings - Tug of War (1981)

The sessions that produced Tug Of War and much of Pipes Of Peace were the last time that Denny Laine recorded with Paul McCartney. After this, they fell out and became estranged and Wings officially broke up, with no touring in sight as Paul and Linda wanted to focus on putting their kids through school (and in the aftermath of John's murder, this decision likely involved security/privacy concerns).

While the whole of Wings rehearsed a lot of the material that ended up on these albums in 1979/1980, it was decided that the whole band would not be used to record the next album. Still, the core Wings trio of the McCartneys & Laine feature on many of the songs, meaning we can put together the Wings album that never was.

All of these songs feature Denny Laine, according to Wikipedia and the Paul McCartney Project. I believe Linda performs on all of these too, making it an authentic Wings album.

Paul McCartney - Yesterday and Today (1966)

Working on getting a load of ideas out while I have a day off. This time I'm running with the idea of Yesterday being released as a solo Paul single in 1965, leading to Paul's first solo album in 1966. The fate of the Beatles... who knows? This is probably a one-off.

Artwork heavily, heavily inspired by Buddy Holly's "Giant".

Band On The Run - The Beatles (An Alternate History)

Following Imagine, the Beatles spent 1972 with their solo work. Earlier in 1971, John and Yoko moved to Edinburgh, Scotland where soon enough, they gained custody of Yoko's child, Kyoko Ono. In June 1972, Lennon released the album Sometime In Edinburgh, a double album including songs unused from Imagine such as Cold Turkey, Oh Yoko!, and I Don't Wanna Be A Soldier Mama. While having a few decent songs, much of the album was lambasted by critics and failed to chart even the top 10, the first for a Beatle.

Meanwhile, George gained major success with his debut album, Living In the Material World, a triple album with songs that can rival any song by The Beatles. The consensus from day one was it was the best solo album by any Beatle and perhaps one of the greatest albums of all time.

But as 1973 rolled in, the band was ready to make music again as they released the single Live and Let Die for the James Bond movie of the same name. In late August 1973, the Beatles left for Lagos, Nigeria to make their newest album. Alongside them were musicians Billy Preston, Paul's wife Linda McCartney, and Denny Laine, whom Paul introduced to the band back in 1971. The seven Beatles entered Nigeria unknowingly heading into what John called "a total fucking mess". The trip is infamous for many things including the blackout incident, John and Yoko's mugging, and Paul's bronchial spasm. But what came out of Nigeria were 23 songs that producer George Martin used to make a coherent story revolving around themes of freedom and escape. A concept album.

In November 1973, Band On The Run would release, becoming one of their greatest albums ever made. All of their hard work payed through as critics gave the album glowing reviews and it quickly headed to No. 1, cementing it as one of the greatest album by The Beatles ever.

Sleepers - A Double Album Of Beatles "Deep Cuts"

Before I start, I understand that NONE of these songs are "deep cuts" to the redditors on this sub!!

A scenario for this album…

You have a friend who is a casual Beatles fan. They have the “1” compilation. Or maybe the Red and Blue compilations. But that’s about it. Your friend has asked you to put together an album of so-called “deep cuts” from Beatles albums. You oblige but quickly realize you can’t just make one album…it has to be a double album!!

This album goes through the discography twice in chronological order. The Beatles have 13 albums (yes…MMT is an album!). As you all know, I am obsessed with the 14 track album. So, two bonus tracks have been added to make the album 28 tracks.

(Note: The art was done by mistahwhite04. The rear cover contains only the first 14 tracks because that was the original version of this album. I didn’t want to ask them to update the tracklist. Forgive me.)

Please...no comments that start "Song X is not a deep cut!" To the casual Beatles fan, in the scenario I provided, these all would be "deeper" cuts!!

Here is the tracklist:

  1. Ask Me Why
  2. All I've Got To Do
  3. I'll Be Back
  4. What You're Doing
  5. I Need You
  6. I'm Looking Through You
  7. And You're Bird Can Sing
  8. Good Morning Good Morning
  9. Flying
  10. Savoy Truffle
  11. Only A Northern Song
  12. You Never Give Me Your Money
  13. For You Blue
  14. Leave My Kitten Alone
  15. There’s A Place
  16. Not A Second Time
  17. When I Get Home
  18. Every Little Thing
  19. Tell Me What You See
  20. The Word
  21. I’m Only Sleeping
  22. Within You Without You
  23. Baby You’re A Rich Man
  24. Everybody’s Got Something To Hide…
  25. All Together Now
  26. Sun King
  27. Dig a Pony
  28. 12-Bar Original

[1975] The Beatles - LIVE (Again)

Side A:

  1. Maybe I’m Amazed/Lady Madonna
  2. My Sweet Lord
  3. Imagine
  4. Something
  5. It Don’t Come Easy

[DBWI] [1971] Paul McCartney - Hot as Sun (What if The Beatles broke up in 1970?)

One of the most common tropes for Beatles fan albums is making solo Beatles albums, commonly under the context of The Beatles never forming. Any fan album community on the minitel is sure to contain albums with this premises (my favorite is 'Alternate History Albums' by Tragiclifeform, go check his mixes out on Vimeo). However, there is a points of divergence for this type of fan album that I find more interesting: What if The Beatles broke up in 1970? Reportedly, John was thinking of leaving the Beatles late in 1969 to put all his focus on his band with Yoko, Grapefruit, although he would be discouraged by his bandmates and Brian Epstein. But what if he wasn't?

After John announced his intention to leave the band, Paul McCartney and Brian Epstein encouraged him to wait until Abbey Road was finished. Following it's release in January 1970, The Beatles broke up. Paul McCartney would spend 1970 spending him with Linda and working on his second solo album, Hot as Sun.

Released May 12, 1971.

All Things Must Pass - Single Album Version

After the Beatles albums, ATMP is probably my favorite album, regardless of artist. This was very difficult to do, but I gave it a shot. I included a couple of little surprises on it…two outtakes that I really like.

I did not include My Sweet Lord. I love it, but I thought it was interesting to listen to these songs without it.

Londontown (John joins Wings Pt 4)

The prior year, the Quarrymen undertook the massively successful Quarrymen Over America tour, which was incredibly exciting for the two Beatles in the group, who hadn't been to the country for a decade. John, for once, was invigorated, and was highly anticipating the following years tour, where they would aim for Europe and parts of Asia.

This fell through after Linda became pregnant, leading to argument between John and Paul. In return, Paul was frustrated by John's lack of original material, with two of the songs he brought to the session being leftover covers from Rockers and Ballads.

To make matters worse, the album was poorly received critically and commercially, leading to the Quarrymen going on hiatus.

Side One:

  1. Londontown

  2. Cafe On The Left Bank

  3. Sugartime (Linda on vocal)

  4. Cuff Link

  5. Real Love

  6. Surprise Surprise (Sweet Bird Of Paradox)

Side Two:

  1. Free As A Bird (with a George Harrison guest appearance)

  2. I've Had Enough

  3. Children Children (Laine on vocal)

  4. With A Little Luck

  5. Ain't That A Shame

  6. Name and Address

  7. Just Because

“What If” album: Across the Universe (1968)

I’ve always wondered what a pre-Rishikesh trip album would look like. I present to everyone: “Across the Universe” released in May or June 1968. It compiles 1967 singles, Magical Mystery Tour tracks, the February 1968 sessions, the “Lady Madonna” single, and Yellow Submarine album tracks intended for the cancelled 1969 EP.

Side 1
“It’s All Too Much”
“I am the Walrus”
“Hello, Goodbye”
“All Together Now”
“Across the Universe” - the Anthology 2 version
“The Inner Light”

Side 2
“All You Need Is Love”
“Baby, You’re a Rich Man”
“Only a Northern Song”
“Hey Bulldog”
“Lady Madonna”
“You Know My Name (Look Up the Number)” - the Anthology 2 version

It’s fun! A nice “what if” between the Magical Mystery Tour EP and the “White Album.”
