My SNL 1976 set, comment yours!

I love love LOVE this John and Paul hypothetical, it's probably my favorite collab opportunity outside of Venus and Mars or a 1980 album.

Many people have their own preferences for a what if setlist, but for me, I felt it made sense to do a few Beatles staples, then just rock and roll covers, as that'd make more sense for the out of practice Lennon-McCartney to be able to play proficiently.

Having come across some neat fan mixes, I will also link my YouTube playlist and the versions used.

THE SETLIST

  1. Be Bop A Lula (Fan mix combo of John's Rock and Roll and Paul's Unplugged)

  2. Across The Universe (Take 6) (White Album SDE)

  3. Sweet Little Sixteen (From the Backyard Sessions, bootleg)

  4. Twenty Flight Rock (One Hand Clapping/The Backyard)

  5. Blackbird (One Hand Clapping/The Backyard)

  6. I Saw Her Standing There (Fan mix combo of John's MSG performance, and I think Tripping The Live Fantastic for Paul's vocals?)

McCartney Sings! (1963) [Paul Is Found (1/7)]

I had another timeline planned after my "Paul is Missing" series, but on those posts I had a few comments asking what Paul was doing in this timeline. Originally I had nothing in mind for Paul and I wanted to leave it up to people's imagination as to why Klaus had taken his place. Now I've decided to make some solo Paul albums from 1963-1969 as a kind of sister series to my "Paul is Missing" fan albums. It makes sense to get this one out of the way first before I move on with my other timeline.

Let's say Paul splits from the Beatles and flies solo, scoring a deal with Decca Records. He is presented as a kind of teen idol, and the hit potential of his original songs is recognised. After the success of the lead single "Love Me Do" (c/w "P.S. I Love You") and its follow-up "I'll Be on My Way" (c/w "Love of the Loved"), McCartney records an LP almost entirely consisting of original material. It releases to great commercial success, and McCartney with his backing band - the Wings - sell out concerts in venues across the UK.

All of these are available on official Beatles releases. Apple Jam versions used where noted.

Side A

  1. I Saw Her Standing There [Please Please Me]
  2. Besame Mucho [Anthology 1]
  3. A World Without Love [Apple Jam - Off the Beatle Track]
  4. Like Dreamers Do [Anthology 1]
  5. Love Me Do [Please Please Me]
  6. P.S. I Love You [Please Please Me]
  7. Hold Me Tight [With the Beatles]

Side B

  1. Lucille [On Air - Live at the BBC Volume II]
  2. I'll Be on My Way [Live at the BBC]
  3. Love of the Loved [Apple Jam - Off the Beatle Track]
  4. Searchin' [Anthology 1]
  5. The Hippy Hippy Shake [Live at the BBC]
  6. A Taste of Honey [Please Please Me]
  7. Long Tall Sally [Live at the BBC]

The Beatles (1968) [Paul Is Missing 6/6)]

In February 1968, John, George, Klaus, and Ringo, alongside manager Brian Epstein, flew out to Rishikesh, India, where they joined a small band of western pop stars who had taken an interest in transcendental meditation. While out there, the band composed a number of new songs for their next album. Away from the far-out scenes of London and (mostly) free of substances, the band were prolific in the number of songs they wrote, narrowing the selection down to 12 tracks to record.

In the spirit of the moment, the Beatles began recording the album in India. In the initial sessions, the group aimed for a more stripped-down, acoustic affair, which yielded the songs "Julia", "Look at Me", "Revolution 1", "Sour Milk Sea", and "Cry Baby Cry". However, due to turmoil within the group - George was frustrated that they had distracted themselves from the purpose of their trip - and an eventual falling-out with the Maharishi over allegations made against him, the band left India in May, taking the studio tapes with them.

Sessions resumed in May 1968, with the group adding some overdubs to the songs they had already recorded and recorded the non-album single "Revolution" (c/w "What's the New Mary Jane") before proceeding with the album. The B-side reflected the influence of Lennon's new partner, Yoko Ono, with whom he had started to record sound collages and experimental home tapes. This was reflected in the album's penultimate track, "Revolution 9".

However, it was Yoko's influence and presence which was inadvertently responsible for the band's split. George was not keen on her, and had been told by a number of people that Yoko had built a bad reputation for herself in New York City. In one heated session George brought this up, which resulted in an altercation between himself and John. The sessions came to a halt, and when Brian eventually arranged for George and John to meet in the same room again, the best agreement they could come to was that they would record their parts seperately, in different studios.

The album was finished by September 1968 and released that November. Following the success of "Revolution", which peaked at #5, and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" (c/w "Across the Universe"), which peaked at #3, the album was seen as something of a comeback upon its release, although many critics derided the inclusion of "Revolution 9". For a brief time, it seemed that the Beatles had found their footing again.

Track Listing

Side A

  1. Revolution 1
  2. Sour Milk Sea
  3. Look At Me
  4. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
  5. Happiness is a Warm Gun
  6. Isn't It a Pity

Side B

  1. The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill
  2. Julia
  3. Don't Pass Me By
  4. Long, Long, Long
  5. Cry Baby Cry
  6. Revolution 9
  7. Across the Universe

Sadly, a follow-up never came. John and George's working relationship wasn't quite the same due to the animosity between George and Yoko, and with John mostly strung out and more focused on following experimental projects with Yoko, George took off to New York in 1968 to meet Bob Dylan and The Band, who had met the Beatles when they toured the UK in 1966. After co-writing with Dylan and jamming with the Band, George, who had become a prolific songwriter in his own right, built up the courage to quit the band. With one songwriter gone and the other more focused on the avant-garde scene, the band officially went their seperate ways in January 1969.

Klaus and Ringo remained good friends with John and George and performed on many of their solo albums, but a full Beatles reunion would not occur until the late 1970s when John and George finally put aside their differences for a concert tour. The original line-up recorded their final album in 1980. John, George, Klaus, and Ringo mainly worked seperately after this, with John and George pursuing respectable solo careers, Klaus becoming a respected record producer back in Germany, and Ringo becoming an in-demand live and session drummer. A reunion was held in 2002 after George Harrison passed away from lung cancer.

Some Time In New York City

INSPIRED BY THIS.

RELEASED BY APPLE RECORDS ON JUNE 17, 1972

‘Most other people express themselves by playing football at weekends or shouting. But here am I in New York and I hear about thirteen people shot dead in Ireland and I react immediately. And being what I am I react in four-to-the-bar with a guitar break in the middle.’

– John Lennon, 1972

BACKSTORY: After his first post hiatus studio album, John decided to make a more political and social album. He initially wanted Frank Zappa and his band, The Mothers of Invention, and George to play on the album. Zappa accepted, but George declined, as he was working on his second solo album. The album’s recording and production went smoothly, with them playing at the John Sinclair Freedom Rally, and the "One to One" benefit concert for the children at Willowbrook. The album was originally produced by John and Yoko, but after it was given to Apple, it was de-mixed theb re-mixed by Phil Spector.

The Beatles My Way Series - Hold Me Tight (One Paul Song From Each Album)

I get in my car for a 30 or 40-minute ride. And…I’m in a John mood, let’s say. I created these albums for those times when I just wanted to listen to my favorites by any one of the Beatles.

If I wanted to listen to a personal greatest hits album in one sitting by one of The Beatles, which 14 songs would I choose? This was quite a challenge for me.

That is why I titled this series The Beatles My Way Series.

There are a couple of types of albums in this series.

14-track My Way albums for each guy. My personal, overall favorites. Ringo’s is a little different. 1 “wild card” track per album.

14-track My Way albums for each guy but I can only choose 1 song per album for John, Paul and George. The songs are then presented chronologically on the albums. It’s a great way to see each guy’s progression through the years. 1 “wild card” track per album.

I also have a My Way 14-track collection of my favorite songs, one from each album. 1 “wild card” track for this album.

Finally, I have a My Deserted Island Beatles CD. I can only listen to one CD for a year. I have to put together 80 minutes of Beatles music. A real challenge!!

*Once again...many thanks to Top_Major for the artwork!*

The Beatles - My Way Series - Hold Me Tight (One Paul Song From Each Album)

  1. I Saw Her Standing There

  2. Hold Me Tight

  10. Mother Nature’s Son

  11. All Together Now

  12. You Never Give Me Your Money

[EARTH-1102] FINALE: Dungeon Lane (“the final beatles album”) [2026]

during the making of the get back documentary, peter jackson invented an AI to be able to isolate the voices of the beatles out of noisy recordings, and eventually led to paul and ringo completing “now and then”, a song considered for tug of war, but deemed too hard to work with at the time. once they finished it, wanting to go out with a bang, decided to make a full on final beatles album using new paul and ringo compositions, the completed but unreleased ”real love” from the tug of war sessions (which essentially became a carnival of light style legend to the fans at this point) and completing more unreleased demos by john and george.

Stream of Time (1967) [Paul Is Missing (5/6)]

A long wait followed the release of Magic Circle in 1966. The band took some time off after the conclusion of their summer tour and worked on some individual projects, with John at last publishing a book of his creative writing and poetry while continuing to indulge in substances he had been introduced to over the previous four years: marijuana and LSD. George visited India and Ringo and Klaus floated around, offering session work here and there while waiting for a call from John to come to the studio for the next Beatles album.

That call came in November when John presented his song "Strawberry Fields Forever". Recording took place over the following weeks as the song became one of the band's most ambitious projects. However, he had little else to offer at the time and George's contributions were deemed unsuitable, leaving them without a single for Christmas. A greatest hits album was issued instead, and the band returned to work in January.

Eventually, George's semi-recent composition "Art of Dying" was approved for the B-side, and the single was issued in March 1967. It received rave reviews for its psychedelic direction but struggled commercially - it peaked at #11, the lowest chart placement for one of their singles in years.

The rest of the year was spent with the band embroiled in aimless sessions. They made great experiments with sounds but nothing that was deemed appropriate for a single or LP. Eventually they managed to pull together ten tracks, including the previously-released "Strawberry Fields", to assemble an album.

Stream of Time received somewhat mixed reviews. Critics praised the sonic exploration but felt that it resulted in an inconsistent collection of songs. It was also criticized for its short length - although a number of the songs were far longer than anything the band had released previously, ten tracks was considerably shorter than the standard they had set themselves. No further singles were drawn from the album and it peaked at #24 on the British charts. In later years, it was regarded as a "hidden gem" mid-60s psych-rock nugget, but at the time it was the band's first flop and lost them a lot of the good will they had earned. Retrospectively it has been viewed as the "beginning of the end" in the band's history.

Towards the tail-end of the album's sessions, John and George began learning about transcendental meditation, a concept which they introduced to Klaus, Ringo, and Brian. A group trip to Rishikesh, India, where they would practice under Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, was arranged for February 1968. They recorded the non-album single "Hey Bulldog" (c/w "The Inner Light") shortly before they departed, to be released while the band were away - it peaked at #18 in the charts.

Track Listing

Side A

  1. Strawberry Fields Forever
  2. It's All Too Much
  3. Good Morning Good Morning
  4. Only a Northern Song

Hey Jude (1968-1970 singles compilation).

What if Allen Klein's first cashgrab compilation album was better?

All songs from Past Masters, except for Come Together and Something from Abbey Road.

Side One:

  1. Lady Madonna.

  2. The Inner Light.

  3. Revolution.

  4. Get Back.

  5. Don't Let Me Down.

  6. Hey Jude.

Side Two:

  1. The Ballad of John and Yoko.

  2. Old Brown Shoe.

  3. Come Together.

  4. Something.

  5. Let It Be.

  6. You Know My Name (Look Up The Number).

I feel the real Hey Jude compilation album is a bit too diverse in its tracklisting. Can't Buy Me Love and Paperback Writer should not open a compilation which is otherwise late period Beatles. Instead, this compilation is purely of the singles from Lady Madonna to Let It Be. It is chronological, with the exception of Hey Jude placed after Don't Let Me Down because Hey Jude placed in the middle of a side would screw up the pacing of any record. The sides are roughly equal in length.

In a world where this album exists, I think it would be similarly canonical to Magical Mystery Tour; while five of the songs were on LPs already, they're all great songs.

I considered adding the US single The Long and Winding Road, early Lennon solo singles, a Ringo song, or songs like Hey Bulldog, but decided a double album would be a bit too long. Probably just like this post.

I don't use Spotify, so make a playlist for yourself and enjoy.

Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band - Paul McCartney

What if the beatles broke up in 1966?

On October 3rd, 1966, Brian Epstein announced their breakup in a press release. Epstein stated that while they were on good terms with each other, troubles while touring the past year, combined with small conflicts over the bands sound was the cause for the breakup. This news was corroborated by Lennon and Harrison in seperate interviews later that year. EMI would release “the beatles final record” on December 9th to fulfill any final contractual obligations the band had(a collection of beatles oldies iotl), and the beatles would record a final christmas record together for their fanclub, releasing on the 16th.

Soon after the news broke out, Paul McCartney almost immediately got down to recording a new album. As sessions continued into 1967 the album developed into more of a concept album, each track telling the story of a mans life, bookended by the titular band introducing and closing the album.

Despite breaking up, all 4 beatles would appear on the album, ringo would provide the drumming for most of it, as well as vocals for with a little help from my friends. Lennon and Harrison would join the 2 for All together now and all 4 would make cameos on the cover.

The Inner Light [Meta/Shitpost]

A quick shitpost I threw together inspired by a recent post on r/beatles where OP spoke as if the Beatles broke up in 1966. I commented jokingly that sometimes I assemble playlists combining their solo material as if they never broke up. So this is a fan album set in a world where the Beatles broke up in '66, but continued to record seperately as solo artists, from the perspective of a fan wondering what their next album might have looked like...

We all know that the Beatles broke up in 1966, shortly after finishing their final world tour which followed their last studio album, Revolver. A number of people have tried to assemble what could have been the band's eighth studio album using songs from their solo projects from 1967-early 1968. I thought I'd take my own crack at it.

I've called it "The Inner Light", using the songs each member released on singles/EPs/LPs following the band's break-up. The only thing missing is a Ringo song sadly.

Track Listing

Side A

  1. Strawberry Fields Forever [John Lennon - Living with Eyes Closed]
  2. The Inner Light [George Harrison - The Inner Light EP]
  3. Penny Lane [Paul McCartney - Penny Lane / When I'm Sixty-Four single]
  4. Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds [John Lennon - Living with Eyes Closed]
  5. Getting Better [Paul McCartney - Pendulum]
  6. Your Mother Should Know [Paul McCartney - Pendulum]

Side B

  1. Blue Jay Way [George Harrison - The Inner Light EP]
  2. She's Leaving Home [Paul McCartney - Pendulum]
  3. When I'm Sixty-Four [Paul McCartney - Penny Lane / When I'm Sixty-Four single]
  4. The Fool on the Hill [Paul McCartney - Pendulum]
  5. Good Morning Good Morning [John Lennon - Living with Eyes Closed]
  6. Across the Universe [John Lennon - Across the Universe / Hey Bulldog single]

Abracadabra (1966) [Paul Is Missing (4/6)]

The boys' 1966 album marked another change in direction. While there were some elements held over from their previous folk-rock endeavour, there were enough new sounds to keep things interesting, including tape manipulation and looping. It marked George Harrison's emergence as a songwriter, with four original songs on the album. Promoted with the lead single "Rain" (c/w "If I Needed Someone"), Magic Circle peaked at #2 on the British charts and reached a respectable #11 in the United States. The album was praised for the new territories it explored, and retrospectively received further acclaim for being one of the earliest "psychedelic rock" albums.

Following a tour that summer, the band took some time off. A greatest hits compilation was issued in lieu of any new studio recordings for a Christmas release. The ensuing period would retrospectively be seen as the "beginning of the end" by many of the band's fans, with the next album taking almost a year to be produced as the band struggled to muster up enough material while personal issues began to drive them apart...

Track Listing

Side A

  1. Rain
  2. Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)
  3. Love You To
  4. I'm Only Sleeping
  5. And Your Bird Can Sing

[1972] News Of The World by John Lennon (Earth-152)

In 1971, shortly after the Beatles released the single Too Many People (b/w I Dig Love), John found himself disappointed by the attitude of his former bandmates. Rather than responding with another song, however, he decided to send them a simple letter

>Dear Paul and George,
I expected better from you. I believed that after my departure, we would remain friends, or at least that we wouldn't start publicly fighting with each other. But then you throw something like this at me? “Too Many People,” Paul? I had to listen to it twice just to make sure I had heard what I thought I had heard. As usual, something so subtle that I barely noticed it.

I expected you to reinvent yourselves after my departure, but this only shows that you're still the same, and probably never will change.

After reading the letter, Paul simply threw it away. George, who was with him at the time, retrieved it from the trash and kept it for himself. The letter inspired Run of the Mill, a song directed at John, which was later released on the Beatles' July 1971 LP, When the Wind Is Blowing.

Following the incident, John and Yoko decided to move to New York City, drawn by the city's strong political and cultural scene at the time.

John began recording his new album in November 1971. The sessions produced the single Happy Xmas (b/w How Do You Sleep?), with the latter being another direct response to Paul. Both songs would later appear on the following year's LP.

By the end of the first half of 1972, the album had been completed, containing twelve tracks, alongside a live LP recorded during a 1971 performance with Frank Zappa.

The album was preceded by the single Imagine (b/w Come Together). The latter had originally been recorded during the sessions for the Beatles' Everest album, but John ultimately chose to leave it off the record.
