Double Fantasy (1980 John and Paul collab)

(This serves as a continuation of my Quarrymen series of albums, but also works well as a standalone).

Back to The Egg lends some cohesion to the group again, but it all falls apart after both John and Paul are caught for marijuana in Japan. After a few days in jail, the pair decide the Quarrymen are done and officially dissolve the group.

They then proceed to go on a boating trip around Bermuda, opening up a new burst of creativity. But what to do with no band to record them?

Simple. Do everything, every instrument, themselves.

Double Fantasy by John Lennon and Paul McCartney is an experimental double album that would've released in November, 1980, featuring material from McCartney II, Tug Of War, Double Fantasy, and Milk and Honey.

back to the egg (John joins Wings Pt 5)

After a hiatus, the Quarrymen got back together in 1979. They wanted to do the album as a very "back to basics" kind of number after critics panned Londontown. The result is a high-energy combo of rockers and ballads

Londontown (John joins Wings Pt 4)

The prior year, the Quarrymen undertook the massively successful Quarrymen Over America tour, which was incredibly exciting for the two Beatles in the group, who hadn't been to the country for a decade. John, for once, was invigorated, and was highly anticipating the following years tour, where they would aim for Europe and parts of Asia.

This fell through after Linda became pregnant, leading to argument between John and Paul. In return, Paul was frustrated by John's lack of original material, with two of the songs he brought to the session being leftover covers from Rockers and Ballads.

To make matters worse, the album was poorly received critically and commercially, leading to the Quarrymen going on hiatus.

Side One:

  1. Londontown

  3. Sugartime (Linda on vocal)

  4. Cuff Link

  5. Real Love

  6. Surprise Surprise (Sweet Bird Of Paradox)

Rockers And Ballads (John joins Wings Pt 2)

(This feels a bit cluttered as a cover, but better than my other Rock N Roll cover)

This album is bourne of much the same cloth as the normal Rock and Roll. John gets sued, blah blah blah. But this time, the members of Wings join him in this effort, still under the name the Quarrymen.

Fittingly, this album contains a re-recording of one of the few Quarrymen originals, In Spite Of All The Danger, along with new takes on Love Me Do and Ain't She Sweet.

Side One:

  1. In Spite Of All The Danger (Use a live Paul version)

  2. Twenty Flight Rock

  3. I Lost My Little Girl (either from Unplugged or Get Back sessions)

  4. Rave On (Laine on vocal)

  5. Slippin’ And Slidin’

  6. Ain’t She Sweet (Anthology 3)

Side Two:

  1. Love Me Do (Get Back sessions)

  2. Mister Sandman (Linda on vocal, and yes, this exists)

  3. That’ll Be The Day (Rock N Roll outtake)

  6. I’m Gonna Love You Too (Laine on vocal)

Meet The Quarrymen! (John joins Wings)

In the throes of his Lost Weekend wows, John drops in on this timeline's sessions for Venus and Mars.

Here, Paul had never gotten around to finding new members to fill out the band after Band On The Run, so John offered to form a new band with the the three core Wings members, after the precursor to the Beatles, the Quarrymen.

This is a combination of Walls and Bridges and Venus and Mars material.

Side One

  1. Whatever Gets You Through The Night (with Elton John)

  2. Call Me Back Again

3.Going Down On Love

  1. What You Got

  2. You Gave Me The Answer

Devil's Radio - The Threetles (1988)

The Beatles are only the Beatles if John is there. Nevertheless, I felt like the production style on Flowers In The Dirt, Cloud Nine, and Time Takes Time were all similar enough to make a decently cohesive album.

  1. My Brave Face

  2. Devil's Radio

  3. Wreck Of The Hesperus

  4. Don't Go Where The Road Don't Go

  5. We Got Married

  6. Movie Magg

  7. Weight Of The World

  8. Got My Mind Set On You

  9. Figure Of Eight

  10. Someplace Else

  11. This One

  12. Don't Be Cruel (Ringo vocal lead)

  13. This Is Love

  14. When We Was Fab

  15. That Day Is Done

This album is riddled with musical guests, including:

- Elvis Costello on various McCartney tracks

- David Gilmour (guitar on We Got Married)

- Jeff Lynne (assorted piano, keyboards, and backing vocals)

- Eric Clapton (guitar on Devil's Radio and Wreck Of The Hesperus)

- Elton John (piano on Devil's Radio and Wreck Of The Hesperus)

However, all bass and drum parts were recorded by the Threetles, and most rhythm guitar sections.

Ranking is a combo of track list quality and artwork. Though I have to say, this proves how much better my covers have gotten lately.

The Beatles Sing The King (Volume 1)

(Part one of my Beatles cover series)

The lads have done a lot of Beatles covers, both in their group and solo careers, both officially and unofficially. This volume contains all the Elvis recordings I could find from July 1957-January 1969.

DISCLAIMERS:

Obviously, Elvis didn't write his own material, so some of these are technically covers of other people's songs that Elvis made popular.

Most of these tracks are only available on YouTube. So if you're looking to make this compilation, I would do it on there.

Side One:

  1. Baby Let’s Play House (6th July, 1957)

  1. That’s When Your Heartache Begins (1960)

  1. Love Me Tender (1960)

  1. Besame Mucho (June 6th, 1962)

  1. That’s All Right Mama (July 2nd, 1963

  1. Lonesome Tears In My Eyes (July 10th, 1963)

  1. I’m Gonna Sit Right Down And Cry Over You (July 16th, 1963)

  1. I Forgot To Remember To Forgot (May 1st, 1964)

Side Two:

  1. You’re So Square (Baby I Don’t Care) (September 9th, 1968)

Up Against It! (1968)

The search for a novel concept has brought me here...

Basically, in 1967, the Beatles were offered a screenplay for a satirical spy film, but turned it down. What if they were handed a different script, and accepted it?

Like the other Beatles films, Side One is comprised of songs featured in the film, and Side Two are other new material.

Side One:

  1. Art Of Dying (Bond theme equivalent)

  2. Catswalk

  3. Happiness Is A Warm Gun

  4. Lady Madonna

  5. Piggies

  6. Don't Pass Me By

  7. Revolution (Single Version)

Side Two:

  1. Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except for Me And My Monkey

  2. The Inner Light

  3. Why Don't We Do It In The Road?

  4. I Will

  5. Hey Bulldog

  6. Glass Onion

  7. Helter Skelter

Live At The Cavern (1998)

Following Glastonbury, the Threetles performed what would be their final performance together. It is often sidelined as the "Beatles grand finale" due to the spectacle of Glastonbury, but the live performance became a cult classic in later decades.

Due to George's declining health, he only sings lead on three songs, all covers.

  1. Ain’t That Shame (Tripping The Live Fantastic)

  2. Kansas City (Live In Kansas City)

  3. Everybody’s Trying To Be My Baby (A Rockabilly Session)

  4. Honey Don’t (A Rockabilly Session)

  5. Matchbox (sung with Carl Perkins) (A Rockabilly Session)

  6. I Saw Her Standing There (Live At The Cavern, 1999)

  7. Good Rockin Tonight (Live In Charlotte)

  8. Twenty Flight Rock (Live At The Cavern, 1999)

  9. Roll Over Beethoven (Live In Japan version)

  10. Be Bop A Lula (Unplugged)

  11. I Lost My Little Girl (Unplugged)

  12. Blue Moon of Kentucky (Anthology jam)

  13. Your True Love (From Carl Perkin's funeral)

  15. Boys (1993 Live)

  16. Love Me Do (VH1 Storyteller)

Live At Glastonbury (1996)

With the release of Anthology 2, and the Real Love single, the idea was floated for two concerts, not as the Beatles, but as the Threetles. One was to be at the massively popular Glastonbury Festival, and the second at the restored Cavern.

It was difficult to convince George to agree to it, but, eventually, Paul and George agreed to song an equal 9 songs each, with Ringo playing 4.

Their performance was entirely unexpected. They were booked on the setlist as the mysterious, unknown group "The Moonmen." Only when the opening strums on I Saw Her Standing There begun did the audience realise what was happening.

The set went down a storm, and for the encore, they played back a recording of John's two demos and played over them, bringing to a close the performance.

  2. Can't Buy Me Love (Tripping the Live Fantastic)

Hello, Goodbye (1995): Paul dies in 1967 (FINALE)

(Contemplated doing a mid 70s Ladders album, but this series was dragging.)

In the mid 90s, the Anthology Project was well underway amongst the three surviving Beatles. Then, one day, John is contacted by Jane Asher, saying she recently uncovered a box of some of Paul's piano demos from 1967.

Of the demos, three were selected: Hello, Goodbye, Penny Lane, and Lovely Rita. John, George, and Ringo, alongside session musicians, then added overdubs to these tracks, beefing them up to form fully fledged songs. Alongside this, they recorded some entirely fresh material, just the three of them. John also revived a song from 1967 that they had never recorded, I Am The Walrus, completing out of the final Beatles album.

Side One:

  1. Hello, Goodbye

  2. Any Road

  3. Penny Lane

  4. King Of Broken Hearts

  5. I Am The Walrus (Take 16)

  6. Free As A Bird (2025 Mix)

Side Two:

  1. Rising Sun

  2. Lovely Rita

  3. Pisces Fish

  4. P2 Vatican Blues (Last Saturday Night)

Encouraging Words by The Fifths (1971): Paul dies in 1967 Pt 7

(Back cover is lazy today, soz)

The dissolution of the Beatles left Ringo a bit lost. Eventually, he winded up working with Eric Clapton, Billy Preston, and Klaus Voormann on what was originally Preston's solo album. The project soon morphed into the formation of the supergroup, "The Fifths," named due to each members status as a fifth Beatle: Clapton, Preston, and Voormann for their collaborations with the group post Paul's death, and Ringo for joining after Pete Best.

The album was produced by George Harrison, who also provided uncredited backing vocals and rhythm guitar parts. It was preceded by the number one single Let It Rain/I've Got A Feeling.

Side One:

  1. Right Now

  2. After Midnight

  3. Use What You Got

  4. I Don't Know Why

  5. Bye Bye Blackbird

  6. Lovin' You Lovin' Me

Side Two:

  1. Blues Power

  2. I'm A Fool To Care

  3. I Don't Want You To Pretend

  4. Encouraging Words

  5. Easy Words

  6. You've Been Acting Strange

Wanted to make this one after noticing the overlap between session musicians on Clapton and Preston's album (including Jim Gordon, Bobby Keys, and Clapton himself obvs) which helps make this fan album feel decently unified.

isolation (1970): Paul dies in 1967 Pt 6

Though his previous work with the Beatles had touched on his darker emotional state as a result of Paul and later Epstein's death, isolation was the album that truly bared John's emotions about the accident and loss to the public, represented by the two sides of the LP, "Anger" and "Acceptance."

It was preceded by the non album single Working Class Hero/Do The Oz.

Anger:

  1. I Found Out (Take 1)

  2. It's So Hard (Take 11/Raw Studio Mix)

  3. Well Well Well (Take 2)

  4. Crippled Inside (Take 6/Alternate Guitar Solo)

  5. Remember (Rehearsal 1)

  6. God (Take 42/Raw Studio Mix)

Acceptance:

  1. My Mummy’s Dead (Take 2)

  2. Isolation (Take 29/Raw Studio Mix)

  3. How? (Take 40)

  4. Look At Me (Take 2)

  5. Hold On (Take 2)

  6. Love (Take 6)

Like George's Cosmic Empire, isolation was a fairly dark, heavy, and intimate look into its songwriter. Both albums include a diss of their fellow Beatles: George's being Wah-Wah, John's being Crippled Inside.

Cosmic Empire (1970): Paul dies in 1967 Pt 5

(Cover images sourced from the Cosmic Empire music video)

The harsh and sudden dissolution of the Beatles left George furious, resulting in a heavier, darker album, sheltered behind the whimsical title "Cosmic Empire." The opening track, Wah-Wah, was a direct attack on John for his dominance on Savile Row and his infatuation with Yoko.

It was preceded by the non album single My Sweet Lord/Run Of The Mill, which made the albums tone all the more shocking to audiences and critics once it released.

Side One:

  1. Wah-Wah (Session Outtakes and Jams)

  2. Awaiting On You All (Day 1 Demo)

  3. Going Down To Golders Green (Day 1 Demo)

  4. Let It Down (Session Outtakes and Jams)

  5. I Dig Love (Day 1 Demo)

  6. Woman Don't You Cry For Me

Side Two:

  1. Plug Me In

  2. Cosmic Empire (Day 2 Demo)

  3. Sour Milk Sea (Day 1 Demo)

  4. Hear Me Lord

Savile Row (1969): Paul dies in 1967 Pt 4

Tensions between John and George, that began brewing with Don't Let Me Down, come into full force in these sessions. John not only takes the A side of the non-album single, with Instant Karma (I Live For You as the B side), he also takes up a whopping 9 of the song credits for what would be their last album.

Side One:

  1. Come Together

  2. Something (Studio Demo)

  3. Gimme Some Truth

  4. I Don't Wanna Be A Soldier Mama

  5. It Don't Come Easy

  6. What Is Life (Session Outtakes/Jams)

Side Two:

  1. Here Comes The Sun

  2. Because (Instrumental)

  3. Sun King

  4. Mean Mr Mustard

  5. Polythene Pam

  6. Cold Turkey

  7. Beware of Darkness

  8. I Want You (She's So Heavy)

John's push for his material led to George quitting the group, leading to the well received All Things Must Pass, with songs withheld from both Don't Let Me Down and Savile Row.

Don't Let Me Down (1969): Paul dies in 1967 Pt 3

Following the White Album sessions, ideas were floated for a live concert follow-up. George wasn't very keen on the idea, especially as it would mean performing without Paul.

To make the rehearsals less emotionally draining, the Beatles brought in a trio of their friends: Klaus Voormann, who took up bass for all the live recordings, Eric Clapton, who sings on Badge, and plays on it and Dig It, and finally, the great Billy Preston, who provided the keys that drive the somewhat bluesy feel of the album.

It was preceded by the single Oh Yoko!/Mama You've Been On My Mind

Side One:

  1. I Me Mine (Naked)

  2. Everybody Had A Hard Year (Demo from YouTube)

  3. Old Brown Shoe (2023 Remix)

  4. One After 909 (Fan version linked in comments)

Badfinger Boogie (1968): Paul dies in 1967 Part 2

After the well received Nothing Is Real releases, the Beatles are finally getting it back together, ready to begin a new chapter in their careers.

Then, Brian Epstein passes away. Another member on the Beatles inner circle, taken from them too soon.

This leads the group to seek solace in India, which was an immensely productive period for them, resulting in the eclectic Badfinger Boogie. It was preceded by the single Child of Nature/Mother Superior, both songs referring to one of the Maharishi's speeches.

It is also notable that the album features Harrison's close friend Eric Clapton on a number of tracks, in situations where they needed an extra guitarist.

Side One

  1. Glass Onion

  2. Dear Prudence

  3. While My Guitar Gently Weeps

  4. Happiness Is A Warm Gun

  5. Revolution

  6. Circles

  7. Yer Blues

  8. Not Guilty

Side Two

  1. Dehra Dhun

  2. I'm So Tired

  3. Long, Long, Long

  4. Savoy Truffle

  5. Revolution 9

  6. Good Night
