What is your best strategy when it comes to ship design and war?

Trying to lose as few ships and win battles, ect.

I'm getting used to the game and have been trying out nomads, what sort of builds do people play with the most success. I've been partial to exterminators of different variations. Also for weapons between ships and ark ships.
