From a $5 dust-collector to Approved for NFCU card in 1.5 months (The power of internal relationship!)
Hey Reddit, I wanted to share a quick timeline and win because I am genuinely mind-blown by how this worked out.
January 5, 2026: I joined Navy Federal Credit Union and made a small deposit of $5. After that, the account just sat there collecting dust.
June 2026: I came onto Reddit, learned a ton, followed all the good advice, and officially started my relationship and credit journey with Navy Federal.
June 2026 (Products): I tried the credit card pre-qualification tool and was only recommended the secured card. I went ahead and opened a cashRewards Secured card with a $200 limit, and simultaneously set up a $1,002 pledge loan.
August 17, 2026 (Today): Even though I haven't even received my first statement for these products yet, both accounts officially hit my credit report today!
My pledge loan showed up already 91% paid down, along with my $200 secured card. Seeing those accounts hit my report gave my credit score a nice 22-point jump!
The Plot Twist:
I was skeptical, but on a whim, I decided to run the credit card pre-qualification tool again—even though I had just opened my secured card only a month and a half ago.
To my shock, this time I was prequalified for all of their major credit cards! I didn't even know which one to pick, so I randomly selected one and applied—and I was approved!
I honestly don’t even know how this is possible in just 1.5 months.
To be fair, my credit scores aren't terrible (TU: 695, EX: 689, EQ: 702), but I had a very thin profile with limited history.
Before this, I only had 2 store credit cards and zero bank credit cards or installment loans on my report because I couldn't get approved for anything else anywhere else.
Moral of the story: Building an internal relationship with this bank is truly key. If you trust the process and use their starter products, it can completely flip your profile around faster than you'd think.
