I've been working at the gym in my own since it opened 6 months ago. I was laid off and looking to be hired anywhere that would being the job market we are in. For reference, I have a MBA and 27 years of experience prior to being laid off.

I worked at this gym, both front desk and kids club. I was hired front desk, but due to scheduling, the staff needed kids clubs and we were assigned to work there when needed. I've never worked either before, and honestly should've never been placed in kids club just because I'm a parent of children. (It doesn't mean that I'm qualified for other children just because I have them).

5 months ago by and everything is wonderful....but the past few days, Ive been in just kids club and apparently the front desk opener who was coming in over an hour before her shift started, had words and pictures on 'my closing shifts." Because we use an app to see the schedule, she can see me working but not where. The 3 nights she complained about me, I wasn't at the front desk but at the kids club. She said I don't wash towels, I didn't put weights away, I left towels at the pool, I didn't put the pool robot in the correct spot, I didn't follow her DVD schedule, I didn't turn off the sauna, etc. Keep in mind, this is a minimum wage job, so this really isn't worth the stress this lady is giving.

I got pulled into a meeting with the GM, and shown pictures of all these complaints. I responded with 1. I wasn't working the front desk and 2. I was in Kids club.

That didn't matter to him, he said I either had to work just kids club for the next 30 days after I work my front desk closing shift Friday, opening shift Saturday, and double opening and closing Sunday AND closing shift Monday night. So a 30 day punishment from the front desk yet he wanted me to work, 4 front desk shifts first THEN be suspended from front desk.

I was told the 30 days Id be in kids club, mind you I was and still not qualified to work with kids, and was hired for front desk. Only me and 1 other person work both and honestly, just because I'm a parent, doesn't mean I should be in charge of kids. I was never trained in kids club nor am I CPR certified or even background check for this. I just have kids of my own which in no qualifies me for OTHER people's kids. I've never been a teacher, babysitter or had education courses. I have 3 business degrees and worked for a Fortune 100 company for 27 years. I have my own kids, that's it.

I declined the 30 days in kids club and asked to start the 30 days suspension immediately rather than after the 4 shifts assigned to me. I said that I have a master's degree and decades of experience in business, NOT children, NOT education.

The GM called me "not a team player" and I walked out.

Does this make me an asshole? Should I have worked the assigned shifts and gone to an area Im no way qualified to be?
