How best to trim this Japanese maple?

I have a Japanese maple that has been on my yard since idk when. I bought the house from the original owner built in the 60s. I don’t have a pic but it looks like the tree was a sapling transplanted onto a stump? Is this bondai? Idk.

I want to trim it so it keeps its look, I do like it, but I also don’t want it going over my driveway like it is. It is inconvenient getting out of my car and it cuts into the walkable path to my door.

Any good advice for trimming this do it so it still looks good? I don’t have experience and don’t want to just chop it up and ruin it but I don’t want to take trimmers and just ruin the look or kill the tree either. I commented on it before and my dad while visiting, [I love him, he meant well, don’t flame him lol] thought he was helpin me out while I was at work and trimmed it in a straight line and it looked pretty bad, so I want to avoid me just functionally doing the same thing.

Idk anything about plants. I hate gardening. I was told this could be worth $3000 or more. Is this true? Should I hire someone to trim it for me to be safe?

Any advice is greatly appreciated!
