My 92 year old grandmother turning the grass at the senior living facility into a beautiful garden

One of the first things she asked for when moving in last summer was to expand the flower bed so she could bring her garden with her.

She transplanted much of her collection, which she has spent decades cultivating. An inspiration!

If anyone has any recommendations on how to prune and work with the potted Fig tree, let us know :)

My three little Japanese Maples

Just wanted to share my little collection I started this year, I'm really happy with the growth these have put in in the last 5 weeks.

What kind of Japanese maple is this?

Spotted this beautiful sun-dappled maple on my walk today and was just totally struck by the light green on top (sun scorch?) contrasting against the regular green colour.

I’d never seen this before (plus the thicker trunk and density of the leaves) and couldn’t place the name!

My collection

Just wanted to share my plants.

Bought a new acer yesterday, the dissectum. Bought it while it was a bit scorched from the recent heatwave but it will manage.

All are doing great except the antropurpureum in the last picture, it just got new leaves after repotting it at the worst time. (It looks crap but it will recover)

My mikawa and shishigashira are probably my favorites. Still need a better / bigger pot, will repot after this season.

So my 7 acer collection:

Aureum

Mikawa

Shishigashira

Deshojo

Orange dream

Dissectum

Antropurpureum

Arakawa

All potted in pots with a soil mix of pummice, pine mulch, potting soil and a bit of compost.

Their not in their best shape due to the recent extreme heat wave.

Help with 2 sick JMs

I'm new to JM ownership. These 2 JMs came with a grouping of healthy trees from an estate sale 2 months ago. The other 8 trees are thriving in the same conditions (watering, sun/shade, wind exposure, etc) and are the same size. I'm not sure what's happened and would love to save them, if possible! Added as many images as I could to show the condition of leaves, branches, and trunks.

Any tips for care with my new JM?

I just bought this young JM and I’m not sure if I should do anything to it or just let it grow - I understand that it is supposed to grow vertically, however, some of the branches in the middle are tangled and it also looks bare/uneven at the very top and bottom. Would trimming the top, as to encourage back-budding, be a good idea? Or alternatively, trimming the bottom, for a more even appearance?

Overall, this is my time planting and growing this tree. Any tips in general would be helpful! Thanks:)

Mother Mikawa

Looking after the big girls at home this week. This 130L mikawa is doing very well in full sun 34C.

I water it every day, monitoring it with the moisture meter, I have 2 air layers on it and took 20 cuttings that are trucking along.

The thing I’m looking forward to most though is the seeds, it’s covered.

Earlier in the year is only seemed to have male flowers, but I guess the females popped out at the last second whilst I was at a wedding and I’d estimate 6-700 seeds this year.

I can’t wait to see how they turn out

Summer growth on Celebration

Morning shade, then mostly full sun from 12-6pm. Will probably slide it over to more shade when the temps pick up. 8b PNW.

Where should i start?

I have two beautiful Japanese maples, i know it needs pruning but worried about killing it. Any tips?

Osakazuki coming back after a tragic deer attack over the winter. Current fencing for the bunnies. This tree is spectacular come autumn.

Last picture is from the prior year to show its glorious reds.

Soil is very compacted.

One of my previous posts was about a tree I had recently gotten on sale, its leaves are a bit crispy and I’ve followed the suggest advice. New growth happening but while checking soil for dryness, I’ve noticed the soil around the root ball is very compacted. I can’t really even get a finger through down into it. Should I let it ride for now and try and repot into looser soil next spring or is there anything I should do now?

Can I still save my Japanese Maple?

Hi everyone,

I posted this in plantclinic but hoping to receive maybe some more specific advice here.

I received this Japanese Maple (Taylor) as a gift this past winter. In spring, it produced lots of new leaves and branches, so I thought it was receiving the right amount of care in terms of sunlight, watering, and overall conditions. The first photo shows how healthy it looked back then. I’ve been watering it about once a week, always waiting for the soil to dry out before watering again, and I’ve been fertilizing it about once a month. The soil is a general-purpose mix, but I chose a high-quality one because I want my plants to thrive.

Then summer arrived. Here in Italy, we’ve had several heat waves, with temperatures reaching around 36–38°C. That’s when the leaves started drying out, as you can see in the other photos. Thinking it might be suffering from sun scorch, I moved it to a spot with less direct sunlight, but its condition kept worsening. In the last photo, you can see that only one small branch is still green, while all the other leaves have completely dried up. The branches and trunk, however, are still green and seem to be alive.

Do you think it can still be saved? Has anyone experienced something similar or have any advice on what I should do next?

Thank you very much for any help!

Emperor 1 - sun scorch or dehydration or both? (Added photos)

Hi all, we planted this Emperor 1 Japanese Maple 2 weeks ago. It was doing fine until today when we had 100 degree temps. History - watered daily first week. After first week I've been checking the soil daily before watering as I was afraid of over saturation. Today the soil felt damp but when I came home a lot of leaves had crisped up. It gets afternoon sun so I put up a sunshade around 430pm for tomorrow, also going to be 100 degrees. I deep watered this evening around 1030 for 30 minutes also. Thoughts? Will it recover? Course of action moving forward? Thank you!

Starting from seeds?

Might seem a bit odd, but my partner and I are starting to go through some pretty massive life changes that aren't going to be 'ready' for the world to see for a few years at least. I'd like some kind of living monument to this strange time in our lives.

But also ignoring prices, I realized I would rather have the experience of growing a tree (or a few) from seeds and enjoying as it grows rather than utilizing a start. I've done this with a few other trees, including a now-fruiting coffee tree that's over 15 years old. I grew up near a JM nursery where the wife would raise their maples and crosses from seed, and saw how beautiful those were, so I know it's possible. Unfortunately for my brain, this means I must do it this way.

Has anyone else tried this?

WWYD? Power company wants to remove mature canopy tree over Japanese Maple garden

Today we received a notice from the power company that they are replacing the power pole on our property line. (Obviously, they have the authority to do so, and I’m cool with that.) They also want to remove the mature overstory tree that protects four Japanese maples from afternoon sun.

The timing is bad. We live in 6b Kansas, and summer is brutal. Highs in the 90s and 100s (sometimes 110s!), infrequent rains July through September. High winds and severe weather are constant.

The affected Japanese maples are a Ki Hachijo, an Orange Flame, a Kotobuki, and a Radiant, listed in order of closeness to the overstory tree that may be removed. Ki Hachijo has been in the ground for 2-3 years, and the others were planted in spring 2025. Currently, they receive filtered sun all day with a short burst of direct sun in the late afternoon. If this overstory tree is removed, they would get direct sun from 12 to 3-4pm.

The overstory tree in question has been pruned by the utility arborists many times over its life. I think it’s a hickory? The neighbors behind us have planted three Green Giant arborvitaes 15-20 feet away from the property line that will eventually block out the western sun.

I’ve considered removing this tree but wanted to wait until the maples were better established and the neighbors Green Giants were taller to provide better shade. Obviously, I would like to have the power company foot the bill for the removal.

What would y’all do in my place? Should I say yes to the removal, and can I even say no? Should I move any of the maples to a shadier spot in the yard? These trees are highly sentimental, and two are memorial trees for dogs we’ve lost.

I called the number on the notice to get more information, and maybe they will tell me this is a courtesy notification and that the tree has to come down regardless. I guess I’m freaking out a little bit, so I appreciate any words of wisdom.

Pictures 1-2 were taken today around 2pm. 3-4 are from this spring before the overstory trees fully leafed out.
