I Need more Reds

What's not green in your JM garden this time of year

For me, it's Summer Gold, Sunny Shirawawn, Pung Kil, Iijame Sunago, First Flame has some tinge of color on the new summer flush foliage. In the Shady section, Hana Matoi, Usugumo is creamy.....and I think that's about it .

Everything is all green .

I bought a Lileeanes Jewel to add some color but that died on me.

Probably going to plant a Emperor 1 or Shania

Aniba-shidare - help

In the Netherlands, we planted this tree 4 months ago. It was all red and slowly it started to turn green. During the heat wave I managed to keep it well watered but since a few days it has been raining everyday hence I stopped watering. Now I see the ends are turning white/brown and drying. Should I continue to water even if it’s raining? Can someone please help? Thanks

Mikawa Trunk selection

I am trying to pick between two Mikawas. They are about the same size but one has a 3-4 stems at the base of trunk and much thicker, while the other has several more stems at the base but thinner.

Does it matter? Will one tree be stronger than other? Will the one with many but slimmer stems be weaker and thus not able to support the additional growth on them?

On the one with several stems, does the bottom most stem look like it’s coming at or below the graft? Concerning?

Adding pics

I deliberately cut off and sacrificed a Bloodgood graft because the rootstock looked like a 1 of 1 reticulated stunner.

Most people buy a tree for the graft, but I did the opposite. I bought a Bloodgood this year, noticed the 4–5 year old rootstock pushing this insane growth, and decided to entirely cull the Bloodgood to let the rootstock take over. The top 2–3 nodes are giving me this vibrant orange reticulation with bright yellow veins. You can see one of the older, darker burgundy leaves in the background. Zero regrets on sacrificing the cultivar for this seedling!

What to do with adventitious roots in potted jap maple

I bought a potted emperor 1 Japanese maple. Roughly 8-9’ tall. Ready to plant it. I used my fingers and an air duster to find the root flare, which was about 3” below the soil level (to no ones surprise here I’m sure).
There are a ton of fine roots that aren’t coming off the buried trunk, but grew upwards from the roots below. What should I do with those upper roots? Cut them? Leave them to “air prune”, or try to straighten and push them down as best as I can just below the real grade as I plant it?
Thank you! This sub is so helpful!

First Maple making second push of growth

Hi All

Planted this Emperor 1 last June in NJ zone 7a. I wanted something that could deal with full sun since I have basically no shading. It's pushing a second round of growth so guessing it's doing well. It was 2 feet tall when planted and it's now over 4 feet. It had to deal with a little damage from deer before I could fence it off and some minor wind damage last year. Second pic is how this season started out.

Does it look dead?

We had this Japanese maple planted last summer. This spring/summer, only a few leaves came out, and they lasted for about a month before they became dry/crispy and fell off.
It’s now mid-August, and the tree looks like this.
I’m trying to figure out whether it is completely dead or if there is still a chance it could recover. What could have caused this, and is there anything I should do at this point?
I’ll add several photos, including close-ups of the trunk and the area around the base.
Should we remove it, or is there still hope?

Japanese maple not doing so well

My Maple is about 5 years old. It has been doing fine all the way up to a few ago, the leaves started browning and drying up. We have tried to water it as much as we can. I live in Charleston SC so its been really hot. The past few weeks it has rained alot as well. It gets mostly indirect sun except for an hour mid day and then a couple hours around 6till 8 pm. Is it dying?

ID Request: Seattle, Zone 9a

Location: Seattle, WA, Zone 9a
Sun exposure: Full sun, but overcast on this day
Photo timing: Early August 2026, morning
Height: 10-12 ft

I’m trying to identify the Japanese maple in the attached photo. My best guesses so far are ‘Tobiosho’ or ‘Sango-kaku’, but I’m open to other possibilities.

What caught my attention is the color, with the canopy transitioning from yellow/gold through orange to a vivid coral-red/scarlet.

This isn’t my tree, so unfortunately I don’t have information on watering, soil, or how long it has been planted.

Help with browning

Hello,

I am in Ohio in a fairly shady yard. This Japanese maple seems to be struggling a bit more lately. Ive had it 4 years and it's happened before. It looks as if it's scorched but it doesnt get many hours of sunlight although it is exposed to a bit of evening sun. The under layer seems to be less severe. Any advice or suggestions?

Any help would be great

Seeking help,
This is a Shaina Japanese maple. I’ve had it for about 7 months. It’s been look great all year up to this point. I’m in western Pa. It’s been a really wet July/August so far. I noticed it starting to look like this last week and it seems to be getting worse. Is there any helping it? Any suggestions on how to save it.

Seeking help - Tree type and drying leaves

I think this is a Crimson maple but I’m not sure so if you can help out then I would appreciate it. It has some drying leaves which I posted a picture of and I’m not sure if I’m doing something wrong or if I’m supposed to trim those off. I give it a little water every week. It’s been very humid here the last month. It’s shielded from direct sun by the fence netting, afternoon shade, but I can move it. I’m not sure how much light or water it should get. Zone 6

Looking for help with half dead maple

Hello all, i'm looking for any info as to if there's anything I can do to help this tree. I am an absolute novice and know little to nothing about any plants, i've done a bit of research as to how to care for it. I'm in florida, I made sure it has decent shade and isn't in direct sunlight all day long, I make sure to not over water it. However, over this summer parts of it have started to die. I just want to know what to do, i've done scratch tests on some of the limbs which appear brown and fully dead, my main concern is how the main stem is starting to go as well. I really want to save the tree if possible before it's too late if not already. Any information would be super appreciated.

Additional info: the tree is about 3-4 years old I believe. It's my dad's, he moved out of state and didn't have room to bring it, but he wants to come back for it eventually. I'm no plant expert but I imagine it's not intended to be in that pot for so long, I don't know if that's contributing to its demise, but at this point I just want to save the tree. So again if anybody could help point me in the right direction I would be very grateful

TLDR: Tree is dying, is there anything I can do?

How to save this Japanese Red Maple

I believe this may be a Japanese Red Maple. Damaged during the winter.

Is there anyway I can promote growth and keep the plant healthy?

Somebody used to love this tree

Makes me sad seeing it neglected like this. It’s next to a restaurant in this big concrete “pot”. It’s incredibly beautiful. Any ideas how old a tree like this may be?

side note; tried to add a flair but seems like that feature is disabled atm.
