It's a common theme on a steam forums and discussions of the game on twitch: People are surprised to learn that the series has a cohesive timeline and set of lore across multiple worlds. Demons are aliens, there was a colonial government from a wave of space colonization--in a sector of the galaxy where primitive races forgot their origins and devolved in barbarism. It's all "Clarketech" really--angels, necromancy, elemental magic, old artifacts, etc. All of it is sci-fi in disguise.
