USAA $1300 / 6mo vs. GEICO $719 / 6mo
I’ve had USAA auto insurance since I was 16, but I just got my renewal notice and it’s making me seriously consider switching.
I’m 27, single male, driving a paid off 2025 Camry XSE. My new 6 month premium is about $1300, which is roughly a $200 increase from the prior term.
My record is pretty clean. One not-at-fault accident back in 2020 where I had to use uninsured motorist coverage because the other driver had no insurance. Damage was minor.
I quoted GEICO with essentially identical coverage limits and deductibles and the premium is nearly half the cost. The one thing holding me back is I currently have USAA’s car replacement assistance coverage, which pays an additional 20% ACV if the car is totaled. On my car that could easily be another ~$7k payout right now. That coverage itself only costs me about $120 per 6 months though, so even removing it from the equation, GEICO is still substantially cheaper.
My other hesitation is the claims experience. USAA was extremely seamless to deal with during my 2020 accident and I’ve heard mixed things about GEICO when it comes to claims handling.
For those who’ve switched from USAA to GEICO, especially with newer vehicles, how was your experience?
