Claim Question
My wife was involved in an accident last night. They asked if anything inside hte vehicle was damaged. We had a laptop in a backpack that is having issues powering on now.
If we claim this, what do they do to verify..etc.

My car insurance is up for renewal soon, and honestly, the quotes I'm getting are wild. I'm trying to find the most affordable full coverage options without sacrificing too much quality. It feels like every website has a different "cheapest" provider, and I'm hoping to get some genuine insights from people who've recently shopped around.
I've seen names like USAA, Geico, Progressive, Erie, and Travelers pop up a lot, but I'm curious about your actual experiences. For those of you who've found great rates lately, which companies are you with? Any specific tips for getting discounts, or providers you'd recommend avoiding?
Thanks for any honest advice you can share!
I 24 F live in California and recently got my drivers permit. My boyfriend has a car that I will be using and currently has Geico. He doesn't want me to drive unless I have insurance however when I called Geico they said I can't get my own without having a licence. My bf wants me to look into other companies to see if its an option to get my own or will I have to be added to his insurance. I think the reason he doesn't want to call Geico to see what pricing will look like is due to a past experience with his sister. When she was learning to drive their mom called and they later got a letter stating she is either added, excluded, or they won't be covered. And I dont think he wants to risk that. I am clueless where to look so please any advice is welcome.
Edit: When I drive my Bf is in the car just for clarification.
my dad was recently in a minor accident on the freeway, where a car driven by an 18 yr old girl and 2 other passengers tried merging into the lane and hit his left front headlight area. very minimal damage to both cars and after trading info the girl asked my dad if they could handle it outside of insurance, but after looking at the insurance card he found out the insurance driver is her dad and she’s listed as an additional driver. she’s adamant about her dad not finding out and going through insurance but my dad is concerned and doesn’t know what to do. should he contact his insurance and not file a claim or should he signed the agreement the driver (18 yr old girl) sent over that no one will pursue a claim or lawsuit for the accident that she was at fault for?
I've spent the last week shopping for quotes for home and auto. As several people have pointed out in the past, it's like a full-time job. We are in the process of parting with State Farm as the rates have just gotten too high.
I've tried to use a broker, and they were not able to beat my efforts to find one of the top providers' rates and coverage. I can get USAA, but they are the most expensive. Farmers was high, Geico was decent, and Progressive came in the best.
The point of my post, though, is this: I went through Progressive's website, input all my info, and I got a great rate. Trying to pay and make the switch, a pop-up appeared saying, "Your vehicle VIN is showing a lower trim model than our database claims it is." This triggers a rate increase. The rate jumps $25 per month for that vehicle. How is a lower trim model costing more than the premium model? I reached out to customer service, explaining their system incorrectly declared my vehicle and caused my rate to jump. The rep replies, "That's odd." He looks up the VIN and gets the same results as me. The system they use is clearly misrepresenting the vehicle and increasing the rates. He then says there is nothing I can do. What the hell! Has anyone else had this happen? I feel it's a bait and switch.
Ontario, CA - I hit a short concrete median swerving for a fox. Initial repairs were covered but for the last component they sent my car to the Benz dealership due to the affiliated shop dragging their feet (fixed front bearings, then back bearings 2 weeks later and discovered rear diff needs to be replaced). The last quote sent to them was 9K. I was supposed to be reimbursed for the tire I got fixed prior to making a claim, which was initially approved but still no payment and that’s prolly under review too. They sent me an email today saying they will proceeding with the claim on a “without prejudice” basis and that they are launching an investigation. They also stated that the rental that was supposed to be covered will be my responsibility until a decision has been made for coverage. What does this mean for my claim and what has made them switch up all of a sudden? I’ve been without my car for almost 3 weeks and the accident happened 30 days ago.
learner driver, month till test.
just wondering which blackbox to get, is it worth paying extra for a non strict one?
if anyone has any experience with one or more blackbox, please leave any helpful information in the replies 😀
Hi! Does anyone know how much it would cost to insure a fiat 500 for a new driver. I don’t have anyone to put as a named driver so it would just be me on the insurance.
Hi everyone,
I have a huge issue, I'm traveling to Ireland in June and rented a car to drive around to the different sites. Along the way, I have hotels booked, etc. Unfortunately, I'm not able to be covered for rental car Insurance due to being a resident of Quebec. What are the options? I can't cancel the hotels or the rental car. I would like to be able to purchase the car insurance. Please help
Thank you!!
So my mom has 2 cars, one of which she let's me use at my disposal. Our insurance recently lapsed and her policy will no longer insure me, and I have to find my own coverage. My mom is offering to "sell" the car to me and transfer the title to my name. Do I put the car in my name and get basic liability insurance, or do we leave the title as is and I purchase non owners insurance? What is more cost effective?
I’ve had USAA auto insurance since I was 16, but I just got my renewal notice and it’s making me seriously consider switching.
I’m 27, single male, driving a paid off 2025 Camry XSE. My new 6 month premium is about $1300, which is roughly a $200 increase from the prior term.
My record is pretty clean. One not-at-fault accident back in 2020 where I had to use uninsured motorist coverage because the other driver had no insurance. Damage was minor.
I quoted GEICO with essentially identical coverage limits and deductibles and the premium is nearly half the cost. The one thing holding me back is I currently have USAA’s car replacement assistance coverage, which pays an additional 20% ACV if the car is totaled. On my car that could easily be another ~$7k payout right now. That coverage itself only costs me about $120 per 6 months though, so even removing it from the equation, GEICO is still substantially cheaper.
My other hesitation is the claims experience. USAA was extremely seamless to deal with during my 2020 accident and I’ve heard mixed things about GEICO when it comes to claims handling.
For those who’ve switched from USAA to GEICO, especially with newer vehicles, how was your experience?
A pine cone fell in front of my house and broke the moonroof glass of my car. I have AAA insurance and my deductible for glass replacement is $1k. The glass costs around $1k from the dealer. I got a quote from a glass replacement shop for $1.1k to do the job out of pocket. I could buy it used on eBay for $300 and have a local shop install it for around $300 labor. After talking to a few glass shops, they don’t make a generic brand sunroof glass. Since the replacement cost is around the same as my deductible should i just go through my insurance to avoid any hassles or is there is a risk my premium will go up?
as the title says. i’m 21 y.o and i need full coverage.
this is my first time getting car insurance on my own, what do yall recommend? preferably something that won’t cost a hefty amount, please and thank you.
edit: i’m in texas if that does matter.
I’m a 22 M living in California. Today, I was with my friend, and my dumbass forgot about the pump and started driving off with it still in. The pump popped out of the machine. Now, the rubber hose didn’t break or anything. Rather, the metal joint or port or whatever it’s called that connects the hose to the machine disconnected. The guy working there said that the bolt keeping it in broke, and they have to call a guy to come out a new one in (I think. His English wasn’t very good). I gave him my ID and insurance and license plate number. He said insurance will call me in the next day or two.
I’m worried about what the cost to fix it would be, yes, but I’m also worried about how much my insurance might go up. It’s already quite high, bc when I was 18 I got a ticket and thought I had to pay the 600$ fine AND do traffic school, so I paid the fine, the ticket was immediately cleared, and woosh my insurance goes through the roof. (I was young, and they make those tickets so unclear).
My question is, though I know it is HIGHLY case by case and based on the specific circumstances, ball park how much might it cost me? How much might my insurance be raised, if at all? I don’t even need a specific number range if u can’t do that, even just tell me if it’s significant or not. Ofc I will see what the insurance says, but until then, are any of you able to warn me about the possible damages to my wallet?
So I was in an accident where car 1 t-boned car 2 which sent car 2 flying into me as I was sitting at a stop sign.
Just talked to progressive and at first they said they would not be able to fix my car then offered half of the at fault drivers property damage coverage which would get me $5k. (They have $10k total)
I’ve been in a bad spot lately and don’t have collision on my side so I can’t go through mine.
Am I basically capped here at $5k?
Both other cars/drivers are insured with progressive. I’m with USAA.
Recently I got a dui. I ran over a sidewalk and severely damaged underneath my car. It is unknown if it is totaled yet, but my mechanic friend said it is not looking good. I owe about $11,000 on my car, and it is worth about $6000. If insurance doesn’t cover it due to it being a dui, and I can’t pay out of pocket, can I just keep making my regular payments? If insurance does in fact cover what my car is worth, but I can’t pay the rest out of pocket what happens then? I am already deeply ashamed about getting a DUI, this post is specifically just for what I can expect to look to prepare for. I, of course, do not have 5K to spend after getting a lawyer, paying fines and fees, my insurance deductible, getting my car out of the tow yard, etc. I am not sure how to navigate this.
I wonder if a financial institution that required all of the "bells and whistles" of insurance to be purchased at the initial signing, could or would check in or track those extra items being covered throughout the term of scheduled payments for their vehicle?
Thank you for any morsels of wisdom
Other driver rear-ended me. Got my own estimate from my autobody shop for repairs & was quoted around $8k. Driver only has $5k coverage on his policy. For this reason, his insurance rep suggested I file through my own policy, which has a $1k deductible. Even though in theory I would eventually be reimbursed for this, I cannot afford that right now, and I don't feel I should have to suffer financially to get my car fixed when this other driver was at fault and has an inadequate policy. His insurance also attempted to give me an estimate of a little over $1k for repairs (which is BS, obviously). I asked his rep if I could file through his policy initially, have repairs done up to his policy max, and then have my policy cover the remainder and he told me it doesn't work like that... but when I google this information I am told that I could have that option.
I am very new to this, I'm luckily not in accidents often so I'm not sure what the best way is to proceed. Any advice would be appreciated!
Grab some popcorn, sit back, relax, and get ready for a tale of tragedy, suspense, drama, and deceit!
^(TL/DR at the end)
Last fall my son was involved in a fender bender in my truck and he received a ticket for improper lane change. Progressive (my insurance) refused to pay and Geico (other person's insurance) sold the cost of repairs to Allied Recovery Solutions (a debt collector), who is now demanding payment.
Backstory: My son (19), who does not live with me, is not on my insurance, and is not a regular driver, borrowed my truck (without permission) while I was out of the state and got into an accident. A few days later, Geico called and said that they were taking responsibility, would for all of my repairs, and wanted to set up a time to evaluate the damages. Since I was out of state, I said that I would call once I returned home in 2 weeks. Once Geico discovered that my son had received a ticket, they backed out of the offer to repair my truck.
A few months later Progressive called my son & I to get statements. A few day later a different Progressive agent calls me and goes through the same basic questions until he hits me with "so the original coverage investigation was for an excessive amount of vehicles to one driver on the policy." (I actually have a total of 6 tagged & insured vehicles. Other than the 2016 pickup involved in the accident, they are 35, 40, 46, 56, & 59 years old. {as of 2026} I'm retired & collect/restore old cars/trucks for my personal use. I'm a car guy!) The agent didn't care about any of that and went on saying that I was "sub-leasing" my truck to my son and that was not allowed. (My son decided to buy the truck from me 2 weeks prior & told the agent)
The Plot Thickens..... The agent stated "I understand that at the time of the accident, subleasing was not going on." He then went on to demand a copy of our agreement and the last 4 months bank statements although he did say I could redact anything not having to do with me & my son and the amounts. He also stated that, once he received those documents, he could "close down the claim."
(BTW, once my kid decided to buy my truck, I put him on my policy. I told my local agent what was going on and he said that it was OK and was a common practice)
Two weeks later: The progressive agent calls again, now demanding UN-redacted copies of my bank statements & the contract. He pushes hard for the documents and how this is a sub-leasing investigation now, etc... I remain polite & professional, but pushed back and because he kept mentioning the "sub-leasing investigation", I asked what the status of the original "CRASH" investigation was. He stated that it was CLOSED and that they would not repair my vehicle.
"So the investigation into the accident my son had in my truck, that you stated no sub-leasing was going on at the time of the crash, is closed & your are refusing to repair my truck? Is that correct?" The agent stated yes, and agreed again when I rephrased the question the second time.
I finally asked the Progressive agent "What is the worst that could happen if I refuse to send you these un-redacted documents?" his response was "We just won't renew your policy when it next comes due." Fine! I'll take my business elsewhere. (I actually got much better coverage for the same rate with State Farm!)
A few weeks later I get a letter from Progressive stating that the claim was closed due to "lack of cooperation" on my part.
Just When You Though It Was Safe..... I received a letter from Allied Recovery Solutions demanding $7k+ plus "any additional payments". Apparently they bought the repair cost from Geico since Progressive refused to pay it.
I sent a debt validation letter to Allied and am still waiting to see what their response will be.
I contacted Progressive and asked for ALL of the files/documents/recordings pertaining to my claim. They only sent what I had sent them and 2 (out of 3) of the recorded phone calls and then refused to send anything else claiming it was all "Work Product". Suspiciously missing was the third phone call where the agent made statements that would be detrimental to Progressive's defense.
Legal Guys, Jump In Here -->
WORK PRODUCT - "documents and other tangible things. . . prepared in anticipation of litigation or for trial."
"*Most courts agree that materials prepared and information obtained in the routine and ordinary course of business, or pursuant to public requirements unrelated to litigation, are not entitled to protection.*^(19) *These courts generally accept the principle that the mere likelihood of litigation will not be enough to protect the materials and information from discovery.*^(20) Thus, investigations and incident reports which follow an accident may not qualify as work product if they are required as part of the ordinary course of business." - floridabar.org
In short, they refused to send me documents & recordings that were gathered in the normal course of business and therefore not protected under the work product doctrine.
My thoughts: Progressive should pay for damages under the agreed coverage. Whether or not "sub-leasing" happened months later, AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT, the driver was not a regular driver (<1x per month) and did not live in my home. The accident should have been treated the same as if I let a friend borrow my truck for the day.
What do you think?
P.s.
My kid quit his job a few weeks after deciding to buy the truck and stopped paying so I took it back. (Which I knew would eventually happen. This generation!!! 👀 )
I recently moved. Do not know where I'm going to move "to" yet. Right now am driving across the country to the west coast, to stay with a family member temporarily. Currently in the midwest. I was hit in the early morning yesterday while parked. My car is badly damaged, either totaled or will require extensive repairs. I had to get a hotel while dealing with this.
The other driver was at fault and has State Farm. I'm waiting for the claim to be processed. In the meantime, wondering if anyone has experience with something similar. Does State Farm pay for a hotel while your car is being repaired if you are traveling?
