I've never seen Bait & Switch on one of the large providers.
I've spent the last week shopping for quotes for home and auto. As several people have pointed out in the past, it's like a full-time job. We are in the process of parting with State Farm as the rates have just gotten too high.
I've tried to use a broker, and they were not able to beat my efforts to find one of the top providers' rates and coverage. I can get USAA, but they are the most expensive. Farmers was high, Geico was decent, and Progressive came in the best.
The point of my post, though, is this: I went through Progressive's website, input all my info, and I got a great rate. Trying to pay and make the switch, a pop-up appeared saying, "Your vehicle VIN is showing a lower trim model than our database claims it is." This triggers a rate increase. The rate jumps $25 per month for that vehicle. How is a lower trim model costing more than the premium model? I reached out to customer service, explaining their system incorrectly declared my vehicle and caused my rate to jump. The rep replies, "That's odd." He looks up the VIN and gets the same results as me. The system they use is clearly misrepresenting the vehicle and increasing the rates. He then says there is nothing I can do. What the hell! Has anyone else had this happen? I feel it's a bait and switch.
