Multimedia in Quests

In text-driven adventures, how important is multimedia? For me it's easy to add video, images, animation, and audio speech and sounds.

But does this ruin a text game or make it a more immersive experience.

Urgency in games?

Right now I'm exploring if I need a ticking clock in the game. It's a seven part quest and all 7 don't have to be done at one sitting.

Each of the 7 adventures have a prize at the end, but the primary motivation is intrinsic to solve history and learn something new, and the overall quest objective is to help the world.

So I'm wondering if the sense of urgency, common to many games is necessary. Or if thoughtful consideration is more important? Or if they are mutually exclusive?

Developing a high-concept, research-driven text quest.

Hi everyone. I'm new to the community here and looking for some veteran perspective.

I am about two weeks away from launching the first phase of a multi-part interactive text-quest series, and plan to write more quest games in the future, so need to get it started right. The architecture is a database-free, local-first engine, and the narrative style functions as an immersive role-playing assignment.

The story pulls heavily from:

  • Ancient Near Eastern cultures and world historical shifts.
  • Psychology, philosophy, and textual interpretation (the underlying theme bridges spiritual inquiry without corporate religious bias).
  • Real-world online research (players have to look up external historical and linguistic clues to bypass terminal security gates).

It is built to be an educational and philosophical quest for both individuals and small teams based on gamification theory. The code engine is locked down, which was fun, and the first major adventure loop is complete, but I revise based on feedback.

As I map out future quests, the main question staying in the back of my mind is: Will modern IF players embrace a game that leans heavily into the intellectual space, or does requiring outside research create too much friction?

I would love to hear your thoughts on finding the sweet spot between deep philosophical world-building and smooth gameplay mechanics**. What did you like about your favorite games that got this right, and what advice would you have?**
