Hello all,

I moved from NY state to CA a while back. I was stupid and didn’t get my car registered in California yet and it looks like they might give me some large penalty fees for being late.

For some context, I’m not yet an official tenant in the state. I haven’t signed a lease or anything I’m just a co-occupant with my partner in San Francisco. But I do have a job in the state. I’ve been in California for about 7 months now but I’ve only been employed for a little more than 3 months.

I want to know what the best way to go about this is. My understanding so far is that I should do this:

  1. I should go to the CA DMV to register the car in the state. There will probably be some late penalty fees here.

  2. I start a new policy in California with the new California license plate that the DMV gives me. I’m currently using GEICO and planned to just continue with them.

  3. I surrender my NY plates via mail.

  4. Once the car is no longer registered in NY I can cancel my original NY policy.

Please let me know if I’m missing anything or am wrong about the best way to go about this. Thanks so much in advance.
