California DMV is trying to charge me $105 fee on my tag renewal

I paid online on April 26th (I always write on the envelope when I renew these things), they mailed my tag out on the 29th (bottom right envelope). My bank is not showing the payment, but I did not get any indication at all that there was a transaction issue.

Today, my dad (car is registered in his name, but it's primarily my car or the family car when needed) opened a letter from the DMV saying the renewal was not paid for and they now want $283.

The original renewal fee was $178. That is a $105 penalty. Keep in mind, my tags wouldn't even be expired right now as my renewal payment wasn't due until June 14th. I thought bounced check fees were only $30 from looking at past threads on this issue?

I plan to go to a physical DMV, call a representative, all the usual, but am I crazy to think asking $105 for a non-late, their-end problem is ridiculous?

And I know it's their problem, because there's consecutive years worth of local news reporting on this being the DMV's problem:

2022 and then again in 2023 and just found another, 2024

What are the steps to get Non-real ID after Real ID expires (while on valid H1B status but no valid visa)

My California Real ID is due for renewal in 3 months.

I know for sure I will have my new valid staus document (I797A) soon but will no longer have a valid visa to accompany that. Now, Real ID requires a valid status document (eg I797A) plus the valid H1B visa at CA DMV.

I don't want to go through the hassle of all that and planning to just downgrade to a Non real DL this time and later go back to Real-ID if I want later. What is the process to do that as CA DMV is not very clear on this on their website?

Also if I decide to get a real-id later, at CA DMV, do I have to take tests (knowledge + behind the wheel) again?

Can I wear colored contacts in license photo?

For reference, my natural eye color is brown, and my colored contacts are also brown, but they are enlarging so they make my iris appear bigger. I wear these contacts all the time so I'm wondering if it's allowed in my license photo. My passport photo has my bare natural eyes, so I'm wondering if it should be the same way for DL.

My biggest concern is if I'm travelling and get stopped in an airport for scans or something and if it may cause trouble. But I've walked through them before wearing contacts while my passport has my bare eyes and there was no issue.

Lost Driver's License recently, submitted online renewal application afterwards

I have 2 questions:

Should I report the old card as lost/stolen? I'm worried about the risk of identity theft.

Another thing is, my old DL was a Real ID card. Neither the receipt nor the temporary DL states it's a real ID, however. Can I assume the replacement card will be Real ID if my old one was?

Thank you!

Bonded title question

How hard would it be to get a bonded title for a 1999 quad? I've had the quad since 2022. I have a physical title that came with the quad when I bought it off of OfferUp, but I didn't know what I was doing back then and didn't fully review the title or sign it. A year later, I went to a PLS to put the quad under my name and was told I couldn't, as the title was closed. The title has the original owner's name on it, then it has the person from whom I bought it's name on it. The quad had a clean VIN.

Replacement ID question

(Virginia) Just looking for some advice on what I need to bring to get a replacement ID. Not a drivers license, I do not have one, a real ID I guess is what it’s called. The ID wasn’t expired.

I don’t have an account with the DMV and it tells me online I need to visit a location to set one up. My ID wasn’t expired, but I know it had my old address on it, so that adds another layer to the problem.

I don’t have a copy of my birth certificate, I think my mom has it for some reason and I’ve asked her to check and mail it to me since she lives out of state. I also don’t have a passport. What I do have:

My social security card An old expired military ID A photo of the ID I lost, with the ID number Bank statements with my name and address Mail from my insurance company with my name and address

I changed my address through USPS when we moved but that was quite some time ago so I don’t have the confirmation anymore. Is what I have enough to go in and get a replacement and change my address? If that’s not enough, what else can I bring? I rent my home through a family member and I don’t have any proof of rent, so that’s out. I think my name is on at least one of the utilities but it doesn’t get mailed to my name.

Is the DMV book actually the best way to pass the permit test?

I’m about to take my permit test and honestly driving or getting my license was never something I really cared about. It just didn’t feel important to me before.

But recently my best friend finally got hers after like 2 years of trying. She failed her permit over 10 times and barely practiced at first, but what finally helped her was just using the official DMV handbook and going over the sample questions until she could get them all right. She said once she did that she went and passed like 2 days later.

Now my parents are really pushing me to get mine and I don’t even have an ID yet so it’s kind of making everything harder.

Is the DMV book actually the best way to study or are there better ways? I’m kinda stressed about failing now.

Drivers License with I-797C

Anyone else try to renew their drivers license with the receipt notice (I-797C) for the I-485 AOS? My license had expired and the DMV scanned my documents and submitted it for reviewing my legal presence. They said I will receive an email once everything is verified and then I can come and apply for my license. Not being able to drive or have an ID that isn’t a passport is very frustrating. Inputs from those who have been though this will be helpful - how long did this process take you? Please mention which state. This was a Virginia DMV. Thanks!

CADL security features

[SOLVED] The numbers are your height in inches.

Just got my new CADL and I'm confused about what the new silhouette means. In the past it was a bear and the CA State but this new one is Letter, number, number, letter (A12B). I get that the letters are the first initials of my first and last name but the numbers don't make any sense to me. You would think that they would use the last two digits of your birth year just like in the watermark. I'm hoping it's not an error.

Temp Tags Expired, What Should I Do?

Hey everyone!

My temp tags expired almost about a month ago. My car can't pass inspection because it needs 2 major repairs which cost $1600. I don't have that kind of money because I have other things to pay as well. I'm not sure what to do or who to contact. I don't want to get into any trouble but I simply don't have the money to pay for repairs to get my car inspected. I am saving money little by little to get this done but I'm just anxious to get pulled over. I have a clean record and I just need a little more time to get it fixed. Please help me, what should i do?

Does everyone just illegally tint there car windows?

I’m going today to get my windows tinted in my car. I’m in Virginia and the law is 50% drivers and passenger front and 35% in the back allowed but I see almost everyone have darker than that. I don’t understand how people aren’t just driving around every single day worried they will get in trouble for there tint. It is mind boggling. I definitely want darker than 50% for the front windows but I don’t want to have that “what I did was illegal” worry in the back of my head. I don’t understand!!

DL Renewal - Austin

I just recently got a permanent resident card/ green card. My driver’s license will expire by the end of this month, it’s a limited-term DL.

I was wondering if I can renew it now or should i wait until this one expires? I’ve been told multiple times by the DPS staff to renew the day of the expiration or after. Or i will get the same expiration date.

I am thinking maybe with a green card, it will be different.

Vehicle title for deceased son

My 36 yr old son passed away in 2022. He really didn’t have anything worth anything except his motorcycle which has been sitting in my shed for almost 4 years. I cannot find the title. I just gave his bike to a Christian motorcycle group. They got it all cleaned up and running but cannot register it without a title. My son was never married or had any children. What can I do to get a title? I live in Massachusetts.

Bought a "salvage" car, unsure about titling

I bought a Massachussets titled used car from someone in Massachussets. I signed the title as the buyer and sent it into the New Hampshire DMV for getting it in my name. They replied telling me it was declared a total loss in 2019 and I need the adjusters report and/or (unsure which) a notorized letter with receipts of the damage being repaired.

The issue is the owner I bought it from bought the car after it was "totalled" and titled it just fine in Massachussets with no salvage title. He had it for 6 years before selling it to me. He doesn't have the previous owners adjusters report, as he got it from a dealership in 2019. I called the NH DMV and they told me Geico was the one who totalled it so I called Geico and they told me I'm not the original person involved and I am not allowed to get the report.

The car works fine, has no issues and no broken bits. How am I expected to title this now in New Hampshire? The NH DMV currently is holding the signed MA title. What now? I can't get receipts for the repairs either since it was already fixed and working since the previous owner purchased it.

Please help!
