B.Com 2023 → Learning SQL/Python → Want Fintech/Data role — what should I do next?

I need realistic advice: 2023 B.Com grad trying to break into Fintech/Data Analyst roles (India)

Hi everyone,

I graduated in 2023 with a B.Com degree and due to personal reasons + lack of direction, I now have a gap till 2026. I know this is a big gap, so I want honest and practical advice.

My goal is to get into a Fintech/Data Analyst role, even in a startup. I am not aiming for big companies right now — I just want to enter the industry, gain experience, and grow.

Current situation:

Background: B.Com Skills: Basic Excel, currently starting SQL and Python Interested in: Fintech + Data Analytics Open to: internships, startups, low pay initially

My questions:

  1. Is it realistically possible to get a data analyst/fintech role with this kind of gap?
  2. What exact skills/tools should I focus on in the next 2–3 months to become employable?
  3. Should I focus more on startups instead of job portals?
  4. How do I justify or handle the gap during interviews?
  5. What kind of projects would actually help me get shortlisted?
  6. Most importantly — how do people actually get jobs in startups (cold emails, LinkedIn, referrals, etc.)? I rarely see proper openings posted.

I am ready to work hard and start from scratch. I just need a clear and realistic direction now.

Honest advice (even harsh) is welcome.

Thanks in advance!

Planning MSc Data Science in UK from India – need honest advice on finances & jobs

Hi everyone,

I’m from India and planning to pursue a Master’s in Data Science in the UK within the next 1–2 years. I don’t have any relatives or close connections there, so I’m trying to understand everything properly before making this decision.

My current plan is to build basic skills in data analytics (Excel, SQL, Python), and then apply for MSc Data Science programs.

I had a few honest questions and would really appreciate guidance from people already in the UK:

  1. How do most students realistically manage finances? (education loans vs scholarships vs part-time work)
  2. Is it manageable to cover living expenses through part-time jobs?
  3. How difficult is it to get a job after completing a 1-year Master’s in Data Science?
  4. What should I focus on before coming to improve my chances of getting placed?
  5. Any mistakes Indian students commonly make that I should avoid?

I’m serious about building a career and not just coming for a degree, so I’d really value practical and honest advice.

Thank you so much 🙏
