DMs, what "mechanical + roleplay" tricks do you use during death saves to keep players hooked?
Saw this on TikTok and loved it:
>Every time you call for a death saving throw, ask the player for "a memory that flashes before their eyes." Keeps them involved even while they're down.
People in comments added more layers:
- Give advantage/disadvantage on the save based on how motivating the memory is
- Peaceful memory on a fail, driving/motivating memory on a success as they wrestle with letting go
- Brutal version: "Pick a memory. Lose it forever, but you auto-stabilize. What would you sacrifice for the ones you love?"
I'm stealing these for my table.
What other little mechanics do you use during death saves, crit fails, or downtime to blend RP and rolls?
Looking for more ways to make tense moments feel personal instead of just "roll a d20 and wait."
