Hiring Grads
Okay, I listened to some advice given on a previous post and asked screening questions when interviewing college grads.
This particular grad has an A+ in computer science, looks great on paper, has been able to contribute vast amounts of time to college societies.
When I delved a bit deeper, they have never worked a part-time job or experienced having a manager/supervisor.
They don't have any professional workplace experience, or have had to work period.
Thoughts?
Edit: I'm am NOT expecting this grad to have 5 years of experience in the role they are applying for. That's nuts.
I AM looking for a basic level of work experience and professional conduct that is acquired through part-time work experience. Eg Saturday jobs, lunch cover, catering, hospitality, bar work, customer service, office admin etc. This teaches us how to work alongside others, not just our peers. Shaping skills such as time management, professionalism, conflict resolution, meeting expectations, respect, costing up, closing shop, responsibility, consequences, experience of being managed in a company structure, humility, the value of money, and working for a wage.
