Hi all planning to fly into Halifax at the end of May and planning to spend 4 days to do a quick tour of the area and to do a drive around Cape Breton and end back at Halifax. I've asked Gemini to give me an Itinerary and I wanted to ask people here to see if its doable or if its missing anything thanks.

Day 1: Arrival & Coastal Charm

  • 11:00 AM: Arrive at Halifax Stanfield (YHZ). Pick up your rental car.
  • 1:00 PM: Drive 45 minutes to Peggy’s Cove. Since you are heading north tomorrow, visiting this iconic lighthouse now is the best use of your time. Enjoy a late lunch of lobster rolls at Tom's Lobster Shack.
  • 3:30 PM: Return to downtown Halifax. Check into your hotel (aim for the Waterfront area).
  • Evening: Walk the Halifax Waterfront Boardwalk, one of the longest in the world. Stop by Salt Yard Social for a drink or The Bicycle Thief for dinner.
  • Optional: If you have energy, catch the sunset from Citadel Hill for a panoramic view of the city.

Day 2: The Gateway to Cape Breton

  • Morning: Grab a coffee and a pastry at 2 Doors Down and start the ~3.5-hour drive toward Cape Breton Island.
  • Midday: Cross the Canso Causeway. Stop in Antigonish for lunch or wait until you reach Baddeck.
  • Afternoon: Visit the Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site in Baddeck. It’s a fascinating look at the inventor's life on the island.
  • Evening: Check into a local inn or B&B in Baddeck. Enjoy a "Baddeck Lobster Supper" or a pint at Big Spruce Brewing nearby.

Day 3: The Cabot Trail (Northern Loop)

  • Morning: Start the Cabot Trail driving counter-clockwise (this keeps you on the "inside" lane, which some prefer for heights, though clockwise offers better sunset views).
  • Key Stop: Ingonish Beach. Walk the Middle Head Trail (behind the Keltic Lodge) for dramatic cliffside views.
  • Lunch: Stop in Neils Harbour for fresh seafood at the Chowder House right next to the lighthouse.
  • Afternoon: Continue through the Cape Breton Highlands National Park. If you are a hiker, the Skyline Trail is a must-do (approx. 2–3 hours). It offers the most famous view in the province, looking down over the winding road and the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
  • Overnight: Stay in Chéticamp, a vibrant Acadian fishing village.

Day 4: Acadian Culture & The Drive South

  • Morning: Explore Chéticamp. Visit the Les Trois Pignons museum to see world-famous hooked rugs or grab a croissant at Aucoin Bakery.
  • Midday: Drive south through the Mabou area. This is the heart of Celtic music.
  • Lunch: Stop at the Red Shoe Pub in Mabou (owned by the musical Rankin family) for local food and often live fiddle music.
  • Afternoon: Start the drive back toward Halifax (approx. 4 hours from Mabou).
  • Evening: Check back into a hotel near the Halifax airport or in the city for your final night. Enjoy a final "Donair" (Halifax's official snack) for dinner.

Day 5: Historic Morning & Departure

  • 9:00 AM: Visit the Public Gardens in Halifax. By late May, the spring blooms are at their peak. It's a peaceful way to spend your last morning.
  • 10:30 AM: Grab a quick brunch at the Halifax Seaport Farmers' Market. It's right on the water and perfect for picking up local maple syrup or crafts as souvenirs.
  • 11:15 AM: Begin the 30-minute drive to the airport.
  • 1:00 PM: Flight departs.

Travel Tips for Late May:

  • Park Passes: You will need a Discovery Pass or daily pass for Cape Breton Highlands National Park.
  • Weather: "May-June" can be foggy. Keep your headlights on during the Cabot Trail and check the Parks Canada website for any seasonal trail closures.
  • Wildlife: Keep an eye out for moose on the Cabot Trail, especially at dusk!
