Day-to-day life with kids 5-10 years old? Level of independence?

Hello, what level of independence do elementary-aged kids typically have on a daily basis? How much does it vary across the different areas? I know it sounds very broad but we've never lived outside major cities in the US.

Kids are 5 and 10 years old. What age do kids play outside and get around by themselves? Do they bike/walk to school and other activities/sports? To playdates? Are there playgrounds and other public spaces for kids or it's only 1-1 playdates to be organized by parents? Are we doomed to drive them around until they get their own cars?

Also any recs for kid-friendly areas with good schools and activities? We are dreaming about a house on a big lot with trees, with some water nearby like a like or creek. (Guess Burlington is out of the question even though it has public transit options for kids to get around?)

Thank you!
