I work at art or living

DISCLAIMER: I am not accusing AOL of any misconduct, only expressing an opinion that I have since I’ve worked there for a year and a half, I am also not speaking towards any teaching practices as I am not aware of the complexities that go into such teachings. Once again, I just want to share my experience and what Ive gathered in my own head.

I am not going to say what department I am in nor which facility of AOL I work at, just so that I do not lose my job (it’s about all I have for now, pay is whatever but I gotta make rent somehow). I’ve been working for AOL for about a year and a half now. Let me say, when I first started working here I had no idea what I was signing up for besides my basic job title there, I had no idea of anything cult-like and hadn’t necessarily looked for any information into it prior to applying. But over my time here its become so glaringly apparent that this facility, its affiliate locations, and its founder are scamming the shit out of so many people that are in need.
When I say need, I mean mentally. Over time I’ve spoken to residents/attendees and found writings (letters, notebooks, social media posts) detailing some of the mental anguish these people deal with on a daily basis. To elaborate, I unfortunately do believe a lot of the people who attend AOL are truly searching for something to help ease traumas, severe depression/anxiety, paranoia, etc. With that, it’s no wonder that someone in possible dire need of some sort of intervention or higher calling would stumble upon our retreat center. This place fully takes advantage of someone in their vulnerable state to then exploit them for money in exchange to be “fixed”. To finally be achieve calmness, live free of stressors, and age peacefully. But thats the thing, you cannot promise to someone with real mental ailments // chemical imbalances in their brain that breathing exercises and silent retreats will save them from long term suffering. A lot of these people see AOL as their last hope, and only by giving disgusting amounts of money to this organization will you be sucked in too far before realizing the hole its put you in. It is often advertised freely (like via their facebook) that medication isn’t needed to achieve inner peace and happiness, and that it may be the thing holding you back in life (which is grossly false). This place is dangerous and I feel awful for those who come hoping for answer and leave feeling just as empty as they came. Bottom line: This place wont make you happy nor fulfill you in the long run. It is not a long term care option. Their retreat teachings are not backed by any scientific research nor screened by any mental heath professionals. Please save your money and reach out to real professionals that can help you and provide valuable resources to help you work through your problems.
